I can supply a current up to date DBS. - Where and with whom did you train? I trained in "Psychology of Education and for my PGCE with the UCL Institute of Education in Bloomsbury, London (part of UCL, University of London), Barts and the London Medical school (University of London) and Kingston University (University of London). - Do you belong to any professional organisations? My company is Top Marks Tuition Ltd ((concealed information) I am a Harley Street consultant and I belong to the Association of Professional Tutors. I am a graduate teacher from UCL which is currently ranked No. 1 for education in the world. - Tell me about some of your current students. Due to the nature of my business teaching children I would rather talk to individual clients about former students needs and requirements whilst keeping data protection issues in mind. I can say that most of my students currently range from 5 years old to 30 years old. Some have special needs and others are university students so the spectrum is very wide. Some have ongoing behavioural issues and others are high flyers academically. I also have clients with medical and emotional needs that are not addressed within their learning environment.

I have been teaching secondary for 25 years, tutoring for 25. I am a progressive dyslexia teacher, I encourage the pupil to gain better marks by setting a challenge to their ability, then taking them through it so that they become more confident. - Which subject(s) do you teach? Elocution, English, Reading Recovery, Rapid Writing Skills, Maths, Science, Geography, Psychology, PE and History A Level, GCSE and Key stage 3. I can also accommodate special needs children including dyslexic, and regularly teach these students. I can also teach younger children and adults. I also run resident EFL courses in the summer holidays. Please be aware that my one to one online rate is currently £65 per hour. - Tell me about your qualifications. I trained as a medical doctor in London having already gained degrees in Biology and History (Honours). Then going on to train as a teacher of adults as well as children. Recently I have taken a masters in Psychology leading to the Rapid recovery system teaching for Reading and writing. This teaches non readers and writers to develop their reading and writing to a high standard within 12 weeks on a course held at Westminster, Harley St in London and Dorking in Surrey. I also run rapid recovery classes for Maths and spellings. - How much do you charge? I charge £65 per hour for my online tuition. I charge £95 for coming to you. I teach online or at a local cafe in Sloane Square, or I can come to the student's home for tuition. There is an extra cost for this and the time for travel must also be taken into account. - When are you available? I am available most days but I do get very booked from September to July so please enquire. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I teach all ages and levels but tend to take children from 11+ exams through to A levels. I also teach medical and dental students. Please enquire. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? Degrees, A levels, GCSE's, Sats and Common Entrance Exams. EFL exams. Also interview preparation. - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. I have regular contact with children and adults all over the United Kingdom by internet in order to enhance their academic qualifications. I use a software specifically for this use with a whiteboard, media player and separate classrooms for group work of internet students. I can use Skype for this or can download any other form of internet communication used by the student however I find these a less effective or clear form of communication. - Do you have a personal message for students? I have seen many students who thought that they would never achieve their academic goals go on to gain good marks at university. Sometimes a little one to one tuition is all that is required to enhance their skills to a stage that allows them to feel more confident in their abilities. I make the tuition suit the student's individual needs, methodically in a way that is easiest for the student. This allows the student to feel more confident, focused and motivated. Please be aware that my one to one online rate is currently £95 per hour but face to face is £95 per hour plus travel fee.

Find out more about Vivienne

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I always had an interest in teaching and when I had children this seemed a good path to follow. I enjoy teaching secondary and seeing the students literally change their attitude very quickly and the result that this leads so. It gives me a sense of joy that I can make such a difference to a students life and future career.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English, maths, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, psychology and history regularly and medicine when I am asked to complete honorary lecturing in the London universities. I have to say I enjoy all the subjects but particularly enjoy teaching those with diverse learning styles. I specialise in dyslexia, ADD, ADHD and Autism and have been teaching these students for over 37 years now.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes I did Mr Thompson at my secondary school. He just had such a good way with the students and they all loved him. As he said and I agree, school is the best time of your life and you must enjoy every moment of it. Sadly he went on to marry the biology teacher who stated I would not pass biology and was a classic bad teacher. I went on to gain a first class biology degree and then completed my studies in medicine.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To listen to the student and parents. I respect the student and give them the confidence to ask appropriate questions, giving the correct answer. We are in loco parentis and our role is very important to the students education and wider life. It's a very important role and one that should not be taken on lightly.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I think I have done this above with my biology teacher and my biology degree. Another would be at Christmas being a 5 year old in my first school and the feeling of not being included due to being from a financially challenged family. I can still see the contempt in the head mistress' face when I won the Christmas prize even at 5 years old. At my current age it makes me feel sad that back in the 60´s this would happen. I really hope that children today feel more valued and respected at school.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

I have been teaching for so long now I have to say I don't have any challenges. I enjoy my job and enjoy the interaction with the students so I don't see it as a challenge. Having said that, I would say when parents don't understand the system and have expectations that are necessary for their child, it can become a daunting task.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Again I have been teaching so long I know my subjects and I know what is needed very quickly. My passion is to make sure that every child receives a lesson targeted for their needs. One that is well deployed and gives better than expected results. This makes me feel very happy as I have done a good job.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I have a passion for teaching and ensuring the next generation gain a top class education in the area that they want to be educated in. That they reach their goal to enter the university of their choice or being an apprentice in a position that suits them. There can be nothing more rewarding than starting the next generation on their way to a fulfilling career and life ahead.
