About Mariel

Hi! I am a licensed professional educator currently teaching Mandarin under the Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL). Alongside my daily classroom experience, I am actively advancing my pedagogical expertise by pursuing my Master of Arts in Education Major in Language Teaching.

My background as a formal school educator means I don't just know the language—I know exactly how to teach it effectively to diverse learners. I specialize in designing structured, highly interactive materials that take the intimidation out of learning a new language. I know that stepping into a new subject as an adult can be daunting, so my priority is always to foster a patient, empathetic, and encouraging environment. I am dedicated to breaking down complex concepts into simple, digestible steps, ensuring you feel fully supported as you build your confidence and fluency from day one.

About the lesson

Starting a new language as an adult can feel intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! My lessons are specifically designed for absolute beginners (0% knowledge) who want to build a solid, practical foundation in Mandarin Chinese. Whether you are learning for career advancement, travel, or personal growth, we will start from a completely blank slate and comfortably guide you to an HSK 1 level (basic conversational fluency and comprehension).

What We Will Cover:
1. The Building Blocks: Demystifying Pinyin (the phonetic system) and mastering the four tones with patience and clear, easy-to-follow techniques.
2. Survival Conversations: Learning how to confidently introduce yourself, order food, ask for directions, tell time, and handle basic daily interactions.
3. HSK 1 Vocabulary & Grammar: Systematically covering the essential 150 vocabulary words and fundamental sentence structures required to pass the official HSK 1 proficiency exam.
4. Cultural Context: Gaining practical insights into Chinese culture to help you understand why certain phrases are used, making the language feel more alive and relevant.

b. Interactive & Visual: We will step away from dry, boring textbooks. I use highly interactive materials, clear graphic organizers, and engaging activities to make complex concepts easy to digest.
c. Flexible Communication: While the goal is Mandarin immersion, I am happy to break down difficult grammar rules in English or Taglish—whatever makes you feel most comfortable and helps the lesson click.
