I have 25 years of teaching in middle school,high school and college. I have been tutoring for 25 years as well. I specialize in history and English with a focus on writing skills. I can assist in almost any area however math is not a strength.
My philosophy of education has evolved over many years of teaching experience. As I reflect on my beliefs regarding teaching and learning,I have always stuck to three core beliefs:
1. to promote positive learning
2. to spark learner enthusiasm for learning
3. and to provide a strong foundation for a student's future
I also provide a strong foundation for the future by promoting writing. I believe that learning to write well is the foundation for education. In order to write essays or other forms of writing ,students must read,research and question . These skills will provide students with tools to search out information in a concrete and productive manner.
Finally, I stress speaking skills and manners in the classroom. I ask students to talk to each other during a lesson about the topic. I utilize rubrics for presentations that stress interpersonal skills that later in life will be necessary in the job market. Eye contact, manners, active listening are all skills needed for success.
We can discuss the various issues but generally $35/ hour is the going rate in Connecticut.
I have been working for Education Connection in Litchfield as the Site Coordinator for two different sites. In this capacity, I coordinate the GED, High School Diploma and the ESL programs at the Thomaston site. I also test all incoming students using initial evaluation, pre and post testing. At the Plymouth site, I coordinate the Foothills Enrichment Program. I recruit instructors, schedule all classes, troubleshoot at the site and collaborate with both the Plymouth Public School System and Education Connection. Since I began managing this site, participation from the public has increased.
I began my career with the Watertown Public School System as a Health teacher and Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator. These positions afforded me the opportunity to work with at risk students especially those in the alternative school setting. Several students had drug and alcohol issues and my responsibility was to hold Alateen meetings, refer for counseling and work on academic success. While in this position, I also became the School to Career Coordinator which involved writing and managing grants for the School to Career program. During the summers when I was employed at Watertown, I taught Social Studies in the summer program and Physical Education in the Summer Enrichment Program for elementary students. Because of my work in these positions, I established connections with many different learning communities within the school system.
After Watertown I took a position at The Gilbert School in Winsted as a Social Studies teacher and Outreach Counselor. In my second year at Gilbert, I took a full-time Social Studies position then I became the Department Chairperson. While at The Gilbert School I was an integral part of the institution of the American Studies program, various elective courses, and mandatory writing and reading within all Social Studies classes. Our department worked collaboratively on choosing historical fiction/non-fiction and primary source documents that enhanced our learning opportunities.
