Find out more about Abdul Matheen

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Since school days, I took a keen interest in accounting, business and finance. During my college days and university education, I further developed my understanding of the business concepts. Later, I developed an interest in research in these areas.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have been teaching accounting, business and finance for the past several years. Recently, I have undertaken research into investigating startup financing combining the Pecking Order Theory, the Resource-Based View of the firm, and the social networking theory. I’ve also started teaching 1:1 for business management students helping them to write their assignments, course works and reports. I don’t teach science or health science although I had helped some students who were training to become nurses, but my help was limited to research design and literature review.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My accounting teacher was inspiring and increased my interest in accounting and business. Especially, the teacher who taught me UK taxation paper was an inspiration.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me, the most important quality of a good tutor is having subject knowledge with some years of teaching experience. A good teacher focuses on helping individual students to progress by providing constructive feedback that will motivate them to study hard. Setting clear objectives for individual learners and encouraging them to work towards achieving these objectives is yet another attribute of a good tutor.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was young, I wasn’t interested in business concepts. It was when I was in my secondary school and higher levels of learning when I developed an interest in accounting and finance. Now it is important for me to read business pages of newspapers and especially reading Financial Times has become a daily routine.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Some high level of business and accounting concepts are difficult to remember if they are not practiced. For example, some accounting rules change with the government’s financial acts, therefore, continuous development in the field is important. Training should be continued in order to stay informed about the changes in the business world. However, with work and family commitments staying ahead of ever changing information in this area is becoming highly challenging.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion to teach. More recently, I have developed an interest in online and virtual teaching. I have a keen interest in imparting knowledge to others and helping them to develop their understanding of the business concepts and with the online platforms I can reach out students across the globe.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)

I take my professional development seriously and make learning a lifelong event rather than a one-off activity. I continuously upgrade my accounting and finance knowledge through reading, attending workshops, seminars and virtual training programmes. Attending to webinars have become a normal activity of career in teaching. Hence, it is the professional development that enables me to stand out from the rest.
