About Ivan

Widely recognized as one of the most versatile creative voices of his generation, Ivan Ožegović has built a career that seamlessly blends artistic craft, pedagogical precision, and international credibility. As the Head of Programme at Maison du Cinéma in Cannes, he curates and leads a platform where some of the world’s most celebrated filmmakers take part—bringing global directors, acclaimed writers, and emerging talents into the same creative dialogue. A professionally trained actor with a degree from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, Ožegović has worked across the full spectrum of performance: acclaimed television series, award-winning films, and demanding theatre roles requiring emotional depth and artistic rigor. His collaborations include directors such as Uli Edel and Academy Award–winner Danis Tanović, and his work has been featured at prominent festivals and stages across the region. Alongside his acting career, he has established himself as an award-winning screenwriter, known for strong narrative structure, nuanced character work, and a distinctive sense of storytelling rhythm. His writing is recognized by international partners, often leading him into creative teams behind high-profile projects. Ožegović is also a long-time lecturer in public speaking, renowned for transforming advanced acting techniques into practical communication tools for people who aren’t performers by profession but must perform when it matters. He coaches business leaders, politicians, executives and professionals in speaking with clarity, presence and conviction. As a coach, he is known for unlocking transformation—guiding clients who want to break type, reshape how others perceive them, or uncover a voice they may have hidden under years of habit. What distinguishes him is not only technique, but instinct: the ability to see potential in others long before they see it in themselves. At the core of all his work lies one belief: every person can transform, quiet their fear, and speak from a place of truth.

I use proven acting techniques to help people who are not professional performers develop strong, confident communication skills. Whether you’re a business leader, a politician, or someone who struggles with stage fright, the tools of acting can transform the way you speak—and the way others hear you.

My coaching is built on three essential principles every speaker must become aware of:

0. Meaning — the foundation of all speaking

Before anything else, there must be sense. If you’re not clear about what you’re saying, neither will your audience be. Speaking begins with understanding—finding the core message, the intention behind it, and the emotional truth that carries it.

1. Naturalness — because authenticity builds trust

If you don’t sound natural, people won’t believe you. Acting teaches us how to stay grounded, connected and real, even under pressure. Naturalness is not something you “perform”; it’s something you allow. And once it appears, your presence becomes instantly more compelling.

2. Volume — because being heard creates calm and authority

If people can’t hear you, they can’t follow you. Clear and confident volume not only ensures your message reaches the room—it has a psychological effect on you. Speaking with steady projection creates inner stability, reduces anxiety, and signals leadership.

Through tailored training, I guide clients to integrate these principles using practical acting methods: breath control, body awareness, emotional anchoring, text analysis, and vocal technique. The goal is simple:
to help you speak with clarity, confidence, and genuine presence—no matter the stage.

  • How long have you been interested in the field of well-being and are you practicing?

I started acting in 2004, at the beginning of high school, and have been working professionally since enrolling in the academy in 2008. Officially, one could say my professional path began in 2010, with the premiere of my first play Cyclops, which featured members of the band Let 3, later Croatia’s Eurovision representatives.
That said, my connection to film started much earlier. As a child, I was already deeply drawn to cinema — a passion that has remained constant ever since.
  • Tell us what your discipline can bring to people's lives.

The craft of acting has a wide range of applications and benefits. Beyond traditional acting coaching, my work integrates perspectives from acting, directing, and screenwriting, as well as experience as a consultant for an internationally recognised casting agency.
What sets this approach apart is its practical nature. In the context of public speaking, it offers a clear advantage over traditional communication training, as it focuses directly on how a message is delivered, not just what is being said.
  • Could you provide some instant top tips to help us feel good in body and mind?

A strong starting point is physical activity — particularly sports or dance. While it may sound simple, an active body creates the foundation for any kind of development. Movement not only strengthens the body but also opens different pathways for expression and awareness.
  • How would you describe your method as a practitioner?

I would describe my approach as demanding, but highly engaged.
It is based on a combination of techniques developed through long-term work with methods such as Michael Chekhov, Konstantin Stanislavski, Cicely Berry, and Lee Strasberg, combined with a deep understanding of storytelling influenced by Robert McKee and various masterclasses I have attended.
A key element of my work is my experience in writing critiques, which has sharpened my ability to quickly and precisely identify core issues.
  • With experience, are there things you have learned or unlearned about yourself or others?

There is a well-known idea that technique must first be learned — and then, in a sense, forgotten.
While I aim to translate complex processes into clear and practical language, it is essential not to lose sight of what matters most: telling a story, rather than becoming overly focused on oneself.
  • Do you have a role model, a person who really inspired you?

Yes, absolutely. Role models are important because they push us beyond what feels comfortable or sufficient.
In acting, my greatest role model is Daniel Day-Lewis. I also admire Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Marlon Brando, Geoffrey Rush, Al Pacino, and Dustin Hoffman.
In directing, Takeshi Kitano stands out to me, alongside filmmakers such as Lars von Trier, Kim Ki-duk, Francis Ford Coppola, Terrence Malick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Park Chan-wook, Emir Kusturica, Ingmar Bergman, and Federico Fellini.
In screenwriting, I admire Billy Wilder, Quentin Tarantino, and Charlie Kaufman. At the same time, returning to great writers such as G.K. Chesterton, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, Miroslav Krleža, and William Shakespeare remains essential.
  • How do you personally relax; what methods work for you?

It largely depends on the project, as different situations require different approaches.
Alongside acting techniques, I often use music as a way to relax. It has a strong and immediate effect on me. As Andrei Tarkovsky once said, music has the power to gently and effortlessly guide us into the abstract.
  • Tell us about a memorable lesson

One of the most valuable experiences for me was attending lectures by Academy Award winner Melissa Leo and two-time Academy Award winner Asghar Farhadi.
Farhadi highlighted how contemporary theatre can sometimes lean too heavily towards film, losing the intensity of physical expression. Melissa Leo, on the other hand, emphasised the importance of recognising whether an actor tends more towards being a “celebrity” or an “artist”.
As simple as that distinction may sound, much of the work ultimately comes down to navigating between these two poles.
