About Matthew
I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and am currently an active member of a popular cover band named HEIST performing regularly across Scotland.
My playing is strongly influenced by classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Queen, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, as well as modern indie bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes. I also have a strong background in funk, soul, and disco music, including artists such as Chic, Earth Wind & Fire, and Sister Sledge.
This wide range of influences allows me to teach multiple styles effectively, from heavy riff-based rock and metal to groove-based funk and rhythm playing.
My focus is on helping students develop strong technique, musical feel, and confidence in playing real music, especially in band and live performance contexts.

My teaching approach is practical, structured, and focused on real-world guitar playing. I aim to help students become confident musicians who can apply techniques directly to songs, improvisation, and performance.
Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether that is learning favourite songs, improving technique, developing improvisation skills, or preparing to play in a band.
I place strong emphasis on essential techniques used in rock, blues, and metal guitar playing, including palm muting, bending, vibrato, alternate picking, phrasing, timing, and scale application. I also focus on helping students develop tone, feel, and musical expression across different styles.
Typical lesson length is 60 minutes, with longer sessions available for deeper work on technique, improvisation, or performance preparation.
