About Jimmie
With over twenty-six years of creative design experience, my diverse skills and qualifications have given me the opportunity to work in a variety of roles and responsibilities throughout the industry. I am personally guided by a strong sense of artistic and creative pride. My experiences and positions have included roles as Creative Director, Illustrator, Art Director, Graphic Artist, Leader, Project Manager, Mentor, Presenter, Graphic Designer, and Teacher, within a variety of creative departments in small, medium, and large agencies and companies. My passion and love for the creative arts is what guided me to expand my exploits with teaching. It’s become more than a passion but a newfound career path. I’ve been a professor in the graphic arts for over eighteen years, and have had the pleasure of teaching a variety of visual communication courses at Alma College, Central Michigan University, and currently at Kendall College of Art & Design and Grand Valley State University. As if teaching and working in the field wasn’t enough, I recently finished my Master of Fine Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art & Design, in Graphic Design & Visual Experiences. When I am not teaching, or working on creative projects with my business; Ignite Creative and Design, I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife Jen, daughter Brooklynn (16), son Hudson (13), and our Australian Terrier “Tucker” (10). I’m kind of a self-proclaimed “foodie” so I enjoy dining out a lot and cooking whenever I have the opportunity; usually consisting of tacos or something else in the handheld arena of food. I enjoy all aspects and genres of music, and this can truly vary on the time of day, mood, and current creative headspace. I also love movies and pop culture as much as I did as a kid, and am always searching for creative inspiration from books to other visual artists and designers. As a family, we enjoy traveling, the Michigan outdoors, and live pretty athletic lifestyles. Lastly, I am big with my creativity, energy, and passion for my craft, but never of my ego.

My lessons on the content of Graphic Design are always fun and engaging. I try and base the structure of the course on how well the students understand the materials and keep the classwork itself creative and collaborative. A lot of what I teach is in Adobe software applications; mainly Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. These core applications make up the bulk of Graphic Design computer tools. I am versed in both beginner training as well as more advanced studies and design theories. I try to teach my courses as very much hands-on with the software, and utilize the time to collaborate and discuss design problems and solutions.
