About Nicholas
I’m a professional cellist and teacher trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I studied with Alison Wells and Ruth Beauchamp and began my teaching career in the Junior Conservatoire. Alongside my conservatoire training, I’ve studied privately with Sue Lowe and undertaken long-term study in Alexander Technique with Vivien Mackie.
I have held teaching positions with organisations including the Ulster Orchestra, Ulster College of Music, Opera North, Sistema Scotland, Queen Margaret’s School, and the Junior Department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
I work with children, teenagers, and adults, and have taught students from age 4 to 94, ranging from complete beginners to Diploma level. I particularly enjoy supporting young players and teenagers preparing for ABRSM exams, GCSE/A-Level performance, and university or conservatoire entrance.

My teaching is supportive, structured, and confidence-building, with a strong emphasis on healthy technique and natural playing mechanics. I aim to help students develop a positive, sustainable relationship with their cello playing, while also building clear technical foundations and thoughtful musical decision-making.
I have extensive experience working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and learning styles, including those who may feel anxious, stuck, or lacking confidence. Lessons are carefully adapted to each student’s age, experience, and goals — whether that’s building strong fundamentals, preparing for exams or auditions, or rediscovering enjoyment in music-making.
My background in Alexander Technique strongly informs my approach, helping students play with greater ease, awareness, and physical comfort, and reducing the risk of tension or injury.
Lessons are available in English and can be tailored for beginners, exam preparation, or advanced study.
