About Andrew

I have worked as an architect and landscape architect in Switzerland, Ireland, and the U.S.A., and I am a graduate of Harvard University with distinction in both landscape architecture and urban planning. I also have a professional degree in architecture from the Technological University in Dublin, and a degree in politics, philosophy and economics. With this experience, I am attentive to the unique attributes and intelligences that each individual can bring to design.

I have taught architecture across the U.K. and Ireland, and teaching has always been part of my practice. I enjoy teaching because it is an opportunity to shape the design professions, and to provide confidence to students with a passion for design,—whether landscape architecture, architecture, or interior design—but without the knowledge to yet practice.

I am confident that anyone can be a designer, and have committed to this perspective ever since I first started teaching. My own experience as a student and architect/landscape architect have shaped this approach, and I am committed to building students' confidence as a designer—this is one of my most important jobs as your tutor.

About the lesson

I am attentive to the differences of each designer and committed to elevating your unique attributes—I have sat on admissions committees for several architecture schools, and so I am particularly aware of the need to carefully curate how an application highlights each applicant's capacities.

Anyone can be a designer. Some people are great at drawing and that is a wonderful ability to have. But to be a landscape architect, architect or interior architect requires a certain intelligence beyond a good eye. It requires conceptual thinking; an ability to synthesize a diverse range of complex knowledge and research; and imagine and design a more beautiful and resilient world.

For those students looking for an introduction to the spatial design fields—landscape architecture, architecture, interior architecture—these are the range of design intelligences I will introduce you to. And for those applying for admission to university, I will tutor you on how to elevate your unique design approach with respect to each of these intelligences in your application.
