GMAT: There Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) owns the GMAT. The GMAT is a computer-based, three-and-a-half-hour writing and selected-response exam. The GMAT is divided into four sections: Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Integrated Reasoning (IR), Quantitative, and Verbal. Lessons go over each of the sections or focus on one section.
GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment: The AWA section is scored with these criteria: the overall quality of your ideas, your ability to organize and express those ideas, logical organization, concise and grammatically correct writing. Lessons emphasize these criteria. Each lesson I give a written timed exercise. Students complete the assignment. I score the composition, we discuss specific problems. Homework is on the specific writing problems.
GMAT Integrated Reasoning (IR): There are four types of GMAT Integrated Reasoning (IR) questions: (1) Table Analysis, (2) Graphics Interoperation, (3) Multi-Source Reasoning, and (4) Two-Part Analysis. Lessons start with timed worksheets with questions from actual GMAT exams. After the time elapses, I score the sheets. We discuss the problems and assign homework with problems related to the problems on the lesson’s drill. For the GMAT
GMAT Quantitative: Quantitative section lessons provide a review of math basics – arithmetic, algebra, geometry and world problems. Arithmetic reviews numbers and operations, roots and radicals, exponents, order of operations, scientific notion, sets, counting techniques, basic prob ability, graphical representation of data, descriptive measures of data, and simple linear regression. The algebra review covers algebraic expressions, polynomials, rational expressions, one variable linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, functions, and systems of linear equations. The geometry review concerns congruence and similarity, angles, lines, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals circles, coordinate geometry, and the Pythagorean theorem. Word problems go over the problem-solving process, representing verbal phrases and statements, consecutive numbers, ratios and proportions, percentage, simple interest, ages, mixtures, coins, distance-rate-time, work, right triangles, divisors and factors, greatest common factor and least common multipole, permutations and combinations, and sequences.
GMAT Verbal: The GMAT Verbal skills section has three lesson courses. The first is devoted to reading comprehension questions. The second is devoted to critical reasoning questions. And the third is devoted to sentence correction questions. For reading comprehension lessons classes start with introductory drills. The drills are graded. The kinds of problems that students have with the drills are then gone over and homework is given that features them. The emphasis in this GMAT section’s tutoring is on question type, i.e., main idea questions, supporting idea questions, inference questions, applying information questions, logical structure questions, style and tone questions; and strategies. The critical reasoning section lessons carry out the same procedure as the reading comprehension section. The corrective on question type is to make sure the question types are well understood. The question types are assumption questions, weaken the argument questions, strengthen the argument questions, inference questions, explain/resolver the discrepancy questions, asking the right question questions, parallel reasoning questions, finding the conclusion questions, filling in the blank questions, structuring of an argument questions, and dialogue question questions. Strategies are also taught. The last kind of verbal lesson type is the sentence correction questions lessons. This has the same procedure as the last two sections. A review of grammar and mechanics is provided. This includes a review of the parts of speech, modifiers, logical concepts (e.g., parallelism, logical fallacies, false comparisons), idiomatic expressions, etc. Strategies are also suggested.
