About Martin

In 2004, I graduated Southern Cross University with 1st class honours, the University Medal for outstanding academic achievement and was the graduating speaker that year. I was awarded an APA scholarship to conduct PhD research under Professor Ray Cooksey in the School of Business that I completed in 2011. I interviewed some of Australia's elite leaders about their decision making. Since then, I have taught a range of Business/Social Science classes in a number of Universities in Australia and in New Zealand. I have published in the the areas or business decision making, qualitative research, interviewing skills, and leadership. My specialty and passion of the last few years has been developing academic writing skills in University students and helping them achieve success.

The first lesson will be focussed on getting to know you, your assignment tasks, the areas you need help and what I can do for you. If you have an immediate or particular problem we can discuss that. I will point out that there are some simple things that can make your writing better. In future lessons, you'll learn what people who mark your paper look for. You'll learn how to organise your ideas so that you can demonstrate what you have learnt. Students that discover these things typically improve their marks by 30%. More specifically, I can help with:

- Developing strategies and responses to answer assignment/research question/s
- Structure of paragraphs and paper
- Reorganise writing to make the text flow
- Identify errors errors
- Spelling and grammar issues
- Referencing

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in tutoring after 30 years as an academic. I had found that nearly all students were not taught the basics of how to go about writing an assignment/report/thesis. This is a great pity because if you know the structure and the characteristics of good academic writing, the task is so much easier, and marks are much easier to gain. I am a fan of academic writing because it is aimed at clarity for the reader, which forces the writer to become clear about what exactly they want to say. A well written and correctly referenced paragraph is a beautiful thing.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I can teach all psycho-social topics - Social Science, HRD, HRM, OB, communication, Leadership, Management etc. I have also published about interviewing, research and qualitative data analysis. However, in terms of writing, most disciplines have the same expectations for academic writing, so I can help most people with their University writing.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had two academic role models. The first taught me Academic writing as an undergraduate. This knowledge gave me the skills to succeed at University. I achieved a GPA of 3.65/4, was awarded 1st class honours, the University Medal, an APA scholarship and ultimately a PhD. I attribute that largely to the skills I learnt from this person. The second role model was my PhD supervisor, Professor Ray Cooksey, who taught me about the logic of research and the research process. I am grateful to him
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Apart from the requisite knowledge, a tutor needs to be a good listener. The tutor needs to find out where the student is coming from, and therefore what they need. A tutor needs patience, and to give plenty of encouragement.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I arrived at a private tertiary institution at a time when the Government authority had conducted an audit and found the quality of student work was not up to standard. This was a perfect opportunity for me. I set up an "academic bootcamp" that improved students' marks by 20%, on average. Students were extremely grateful for this because it not only allowed them to pass courses easily but also gave them the understanding of professional writing for their post-graduation jobs.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge for academic writing is to organise and plan writing projects ahead of time. This is required because students need to read widely and think about what they have read. It is then that they will come to talking points that will eventually be used as paragraphs. The functions of Introductions and Conclusions also need to be understood so that the paper, as whole, has a logical flow.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

As demonstrated above, I have a passion for teaching students how to think in a logical and critical way so that a student's writing becomes clear and coherent. Not every student's work will be a High Distinction, but using the techniques I teach, students' work can improve by up to 30% in terms of marks.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

10 years of study and research, along with 20 years of teaching and marking papers has made me aware of the struggles students face, especially International students. I understand where students could improve and how to correct these issues. My aim is to tutor students to the point where they don't need me.
