About Philip

My name is Philip Herbert, I have a Bachelor's degree in German from the University of Leeds, and I love sharing my passion for the language with others. I have been a private tutor in the past and helped my students go from an extreme beginner's level, where they were really struggling in class, to passing their exams with great marks and completely surprising their teachers. I have also volunteered as a language assistant in a secondary school, where I helped pupils prepare for their exams. After volunteering, the school offered me paid employment, which I believe speaks for how much they appreciated my work. I am a very friendly, easy-going person. I have been told that people feel comfortable with me very quickly, which is ideal for language learning. My classes are a non-judgmental, open space where I encourage students to give it a go and not to be afraid of making mistakes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with making errors when learning, as long as we use them to improve ourselves. Get in touch and I'm sure we can find a way to learn which suits you perfectly!

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring really depends on the student. I think some time getting to know each other first is useful, as it helps us uncover the ways in which you learn best. I like to tailor my lessons to the student's interests to keep it as engaging and enjoyable as possible. As I teach German, I think the best way to learn is to really use the language. Of course, some grammar exercises now and then are definitely helpful to consolidate the knowledge, but people usually want to learn a language in order to be able to communicate, so that's where the focus of my lessons lies. Typically, we would progress through the stages of language learning, incorporating new grammar rules and new vocabulary, whilst consolidating what we've already learnt. You will practise using reading, writing and listening exercises, but there will also be great emphasis on speaking and having conversations. That is what I believe to be the most fun and also what I think most people want to get good at. I am very happy to discuss with you the areas you want to improve on, and we can find a way to do that and tailor the plan accordingly. My lessons are for any age group and any level. I have experience teaching young pupils, teenagers, and adults.
