About Tekera

I have been a registered nurse for 12 years. My experience is in Emergency Medicine, ICU, Interventional Radiology, Pre-Op/PACU, Outpatient Surgery, Private Practice, and Leadership. Currently, I teach Pharmacology, Fundamentals, & Leadership, and am a Clinical Instructor for a Nursing Program. This allows the most up-to-date information/ strategies to successfully complete nursing school and/or pass the NCLEX. :) I am passionate about nursing and love helping students understand what it really means to be a nurse/ expanding their knowledge from nursing school to the bedside.

Plenty of times nursing students have the anxieties that they do not know enough information or simply don’t understand the content being taught. Professors have a large amount of students in their class and may not be able to offer that 1:1 guidance. That’s where I come in. I will take the time to explain concepts and put it in a way that is relative to you. Let’s have some good laughs while learning about the body!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in nursing during high school. My mom is a DNP, but was a RN during my high school years. Listening to her stories on how much nurses impact patients made me want to become a nurse. Through all of my experience in nursing, I've seen a multitude of students and new nurses that are nervous coming in, which fueled me to tutor. I want to prepare students for the real life situations we face as nurses.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love Critical Care. Figuring out how everything connects is really amazing. The body has so many mechanisms that assist with how we compensate. I usually have the students I tutor figure out the why behind their interventions.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

There are 4 women that have impacted my nursing career. 2 I met in the Emergency Department as a nurse my first year in nursing, and the other 2 I met while in the ICU my 3rd year in nursing. These women taught me how to be resilient and show compassion at all times.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being a good tutor means you figure out 17,000 ways to explain the same topic to different students. Everyone learns differently and we as tutors have to be conscious of that.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Nursing is the really the cycle of life. We accompany everyone throughout many phases of their life.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

My challenge in nursing school was comparing my intellect to others. If I did not do well on an exam, I would think I was stupid.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching. When students comprehend the information and get enthusiastic about what they've learned is my motivation.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I'm a Superprof because I care about my students. I want them to succeed. I can relate to them about the frustrations they encounter, but I empower them to study their material and have a passion for nursing.
