About Daniela

My academic and professional background combines biological sciences, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology and scientific education. I am particularly interested in how biological information can be analysed and interpreted to help us understand individuals, populations and the processes that shape life.

I have experience teaching biology and forensic science at further and higher education levels, alongside professional research in forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology at Eurac Research. My research has involved the scientific examination of human skeletal remains, including the study of biological variation, pathological changes and skeletal trauma.

My background in biological sciences and forensic education allows me to connect fundamental biological concepts with their wider scientific applications. I particularly enjoy explaining how molecular processes underpin the characteristics we observe in living organisms and how genetic principles can be applied in forensic contexts.

I believe that genetics and molecular biology become much easier to understand when students can visualise the processes involved and follow the reasoning behind them. I therefore aim to explain concepts clearly, build knowledge progressively and encourage students to think critically rather than simply memorise definitions.

I am approachable, patient and committed to helping students develop both their scientific understanding and their confidence. Whether you're struggling with gene expression, finding inheritance problems confusing or learning the fundamentals of forensic DNA profiling, I will tailor my explanations to your needs and academic level.

My aim is to help you understand the science behind the genetic code and how it can be applied to real-world scientific questions.

Explore the molecular mechanisms of life, understand how genetic information is inherited and discover how DNA can contribute to forensic investigations.

Molecular biology and genetics help us understand how biological information is stored, expressed and passed between generations. Forensic genetics applies these principles to the analysis and interpretation of DNA evidence, demonstrating how fundamental biological concepts can be used to address real investigative questions.

These subjects can initially seem abstract, particularly when studying molecular mechanisms, genetic terminology and complex inheritance patterns. My aim is to make them easier to understand by breaking down the underlying principles and showing how the different concepts connect.

My teaching approach

I focus on understanding the mechanisms behind the science rather than relying on memorisation alone. Through clear explanations, diagrams, worked examples and practice questions, I help students build a structured understanding of molecular and genetic processes.

I tailor lessons to your level and learning objectives, whether you're working through A-level genetics, studying molecular biology at university or trying to understand the principles underlying forensic DNA analysis.

Where appropriate, we can work through genetic problems step by step, interpret scientific data and explore how molecular techniques are used in research and forensic applications. I also emphasise critical thinking, particularly when interpreting genetic evidence and understanding the limitations of scientific conclusions.

Topics I can help you with

• Molecular biology: DNA and RNA structure, DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene expression and protein synthesis.
• Genetics: genes, alleles, chromosomes, inheritance patterns, genetic variation, mutations and genetic crosses.
• Molecular genetics: gene regulation, molecular mechanisms and the relationship between genotype and phenotype.
• Forensic genetics: the biological principles of DNA profiling, genetic markers, STR analysis, DNA evidence interpretation and the scientific foundations of individual identification.
• Data interpretation: understanding genetic diagrams, experimental results, molecular processes and relevant statistical concepts at an appropriate academic level.
• Exam preparation: practising genetics problems, mastering terminology and developing clear, structured answers to exam-style questions.

The content and depth of each lesson will be tailored to your course and current level of study.

Who are my lessons for?

I welcome A-level students studying genetics and molecular biology, as well as first-year undergraduate students in biological sciences, biomedical sciences and forensic science who need support with foundational molecular and genetic concepts.

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, with the option to focus on a particular difficulty, work through a syllabus or prepare for an assessment.

My goal is to help you understand how genetic information works, develop confidence in applying molecular concepts and appreciate how the same biological principles can have applications in medicine, research and forensic science.

From understanding the structure of DNA to interpreting its role in forensic investigations, let's make molecular biology and genetics make sense.
