About Timothy
I am an archaeologist, archaeological researcher, and aspiring lecturer. I have a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Aberdeen. I have been a teaching assistant in the Archaeology department for the past five years. This involved delivering tutorials and lectures to small groups of students of all levels. Along with the course information, I have tried to instil enthusiasm for the subject and important research skills that are valuable for students at any level for any subject. I also have experience marking student assignments and essays, and would take extra time to write thorough feedback to help student's improve their skills. I have helped archaeology student's improve their work through proofreading and advice, one such student was given an award for her excellent undergraduate dissertation. I have practical experience in archaeological excavation and field work. Finally, I have a wider knowledge base and would be able to tutor other humanities subjects such as history or geography.
I also have experience as a volunteer athletics coach. I was a champion hurdler in school and helped develop the specialised hurdling skills in other runners after graduation. Furthermore, I have experience as a fencer and fencing coach for the University of Aberdeen's fencing society. I was a regular member of the competition team and was in charge of running the beginner's lessons with the society's president in the past year. Similar to my teaching experience, a significant part of my goal was to teach the important skills to excel, develop, and enjoy the sport.

In the past I have primarily taught university level students, but I have assisted in giving lessons to groups of younger students. I have experience delivering tutorials focused on practical research skills to smaller groups of students. This allows for a more personal approach. I also have experience in delivering lectures to larger groups of students or members of the public.
My methods differ depending on the subjects and students. I use multiple practical elements and discussions for smaller groups of students. Lessons often start with a short talk and explanation of the exercises followed by the exercise itself and concluding with a discussion of the topic and important points from that lesson, often responding to individual questions or concerns.
With regards to more subject focused lessons or lectures, I try to have a strong focus on current information and critically assessing evidence, important skills for broader education.
I approach helping students improve their course work on an individual level. My goals in feedback on essays not only involves how to improve the assignment itself, but improve the student's approach to essay writing and critical thinking in a broader sense.
I always try to be friendly, approachable, and professional with students, willing to answer questions in detail or point a student to additional information and return to discuss the subject at another time. Furthermore, I try to improve lessons over time, researching and attempting new exercises, or critically considering the lesson content to improve the student experience.
