About Kanako
Hi! I’m Kanako, a friendly and experienced Japanese tutor from Shizuoka, Japan, famous for its tea and beautiful views of Mt. Fuji.
I started teaching Japanese in Canada 13 years ago and have been helping students from different backgrounds and levels enjoy learning Japanese ever since.
I lived in Tokyo for about eight years, so I can also share insights into everyday life and Japanese culture.
I studied English linguistics in college and earned a diploma in Japanese-English interpreting and translation in Canada. I also have experience as a subtitle translator for movies.
In addition to teaching Japanese, I create content for Japanese language learners through my podcast and YouTube channel, “Japanese with Kanako.”

For beginners, I often recommend starting with the GENKI textbook. To build a strong foundation, I highly recommend taking lessons at least once a week for the first three months. This will help you build a consistent learning habit and see your progress.
Some of my students have continued studying with me and are now living in Japan! I’d love to help you work toward your own Japanese goals, too.
How Do We Study?
I use an active learning approach. This means you’ll have opportunities to practice, speak, and actively use Japanese during our lessons.
You may also have some preparation or review to do before or after class. Don’t worry—we’ll take things step by step, and I’ll support you throughout the process.
I’ve been learning English for over 15 years, so I understand how exciting and challenging language learning can be.
From my experience, repetition and consistency are key to making progress. Even a little daily practice can make a difference!
Can I Become Fluent in Japanese?
Many students ask me how long it takes to speak Japanese fluently.
The answer is different for everyone. Your progress depends on your goals, learning habits, and how much you engage with Japanese outside of lessons.
There are many fun ways to practice Japanese every day:
・Watch your favorite Japanese shows
・Listen to Japanese podcasts
・Write a diary in Japanese
・Practice speaking and shadowing
Find a learning style that you enjoy, and let’s build your Japanese skills together!
Extra Support Outside Lessons
I also host a Japanese learning podcast called “Japanese with Kanako,” which follows the GENKI textbook.
It’s designed for shadowing practice to help strengthen your speaking and listening skills. You can practice along with the podcast outside of our lessons, making it a great complement to your Japanese studies.
