About Francesco

Since 2012 I have been working as a freelance tutor for students of engineering and architecture degrees from several UK and European universities. So far I have tutored over 20 students in subjects ranging from Structural Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Geotechnics, Architectural Design.

From 2014 I have been selected to take part as a mentor to the Integrated Design Project organised by the department of Civil Environmental Engineering & Geomatics of University College of London. The module required engineers with industry experience to take part in mentoring a group of students involved in the design of a building or a bridge undertaken in collaboration with other disciplines. In this occurrence I have been responsible for tutoring, motivating and marking projects regarding the design of a footbridge over a railway including station platforms and the design of a tower building in a highly constraint environment which imposed severe condition on the definition of the foundation layout. I mentored my students highlighting, at first, the theoretical aspects of their design, and then progressed with giving them guidance on how to overcome spatial, normative and external constraints. With regard with the design of the tower most of my work as a mentor was to teach the student how to interact with the geotechnical team in order to finalise both the design of the foundations and the structural arrangement of the tower in the given timescale which was very tight. The issue being the iterative nature involved with checking the settlement results from the geotechnical analysis and applying the results into the structural model of the tower to assess the effects of the settlement on the vertical and horizontal members.

About the lesson

. I endeavour to teach students the importance of the first principles in structural engineering over the habit of mnemonically recall formulae and diagrams without being able to explain them or re-connect them to the first principles they are derived from.

My tutoring activity also involves the supervision of many dissertations. The most interesting works I have helped developing in the past were related to progressive collapse analysis of concrete building, design of steel arch bridges and analysis of the effect of wind loading on medium and high rise building. As a tutor I have given guidance to the students regarding the theoretical aspects to be investigated in their works as well as suggested them sources to complete or develop the literary review and the introductory chapters, proofreading, formatting and final check before the submission.

As an additional advantage I also give the students strong inside on the practical aspects to discuss in their works as well as step to step guidance on how to effectively build, analyse and interpret their structural models.
