About Melanie
I am a recent high school graduate and have been playing flute since the sixth grade. It's been my number one passion since the moment I've picked it up, allowing me to occupy the first chair for most of my career. In high school, I qualified for the Freshman Region band, then the High School Region band my junior and senior year. I also qualified for Area my senior year. (If you don't know what region is, it is a process through which over a hundred players from different high schools audition with the same three pieces assigned by the state- TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association). Additionally, I have a solid track record for Texas Solo and Ensemble- always receiving the highest grade on the highest difficulty of pieces and qualifying for State Solo and Ensemble for the past two years. Through my school's masterclass program, I received weekly semi-private lessons from a professional flute player, Lauren Kavanaugh, which has considerably developed my playing. Finally, I have also held numerous leadership positions in the band such as section assistant, woodwind captain, and drum major. These positions have given me some experience in teaching other students whether it be marching or playing skills.

I like to teach with a sort of structure in mind, using beginner flute books and etudes to develop techniques applicable to a broader range of music.
A typical lesson will start with a good warm up and be focused on whatever piece a student wants to work on or I have assigned them. If they are an absolute beginner, we will split the time going over how to create a good sound and how to read music. For more advanced students, we will go over extended techniques and some basic music theory which can develop their playing and even improvisation.
These lessons are for beginner to intermediate students; mainly K-12 students, however, adults looking to pick up an instrument are also welcome!
