About Monsi

Hello! My name is Monsi Briceno, and I’m a professional flutist and music educator based in Pittsburgh, with over 10 years of teaching experience in Europe and the United States.

I recently earned an Artist Diploma in Flute Performance from Duquesne University, where I studied with Jennifer Steele. I also hold a PhD in Music and graduate degrees from Spain, as well as a degree in Flute Performance from the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castellón, where I received the End-of-Degree Honor Prize.

Throughout my career, I have taught students of different ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced conservatory musicians. Before moving to the U.S., I taught extensively in Spain’s public conservatory system, and I continue to combine teaching with an active performing career.

I perform on C flute, piccolo, alto flute, and Baroque flute, with experience ranging from orchestral and chamber music to contemporary and folk traditions. Students can work on traditional academic repertoire as well as folk and world-music traditions, depending on their interests. My performance background includes Spanish and Flamenco-influenced music, Irish/Celtic repertoire, and Eastern European and Balkan traditions, in addition to classical and contemporary music.

My lessons are personalized and supportive, combining structure with creativity according to each student’s goals, experience, and learning style. Whether you are picking up the flute for the first time, returning after several years, preparing for an audition or performance, or looking to take your playing to the next level, we can build a plan that works for you.

Lessons may include:

Flute, piccolo, and alto flute
Classical/academic repertoire and folk traditions
Tone, technique, articulation, and breath control
Repertoire and performance preparation
Audition and orchestral excerpt preparation
Sight-reading, ear training, and solfège
Music theory and musicianship

About the lesson

Hi! I’m Monsi, a classically trained flutist and music educator from Spain with more than 10 years of experience teaching students of different ages, levels, and backgrounds.

I recently earned an Artist Diploma in Flute Performance from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and I also hold a PhD in Music and graduate degrees from Spain. Alongside teaching, I maintain an active performing career as a flutist, piccolo and alto flute player, with experience in orchestral, chamber, contemporary, early music, and folk traditions.

My approach is personalized, creative, and student-centered. Whether you’re a complete beginner, an intermediate player, an advanced musician, or returning to the flute after some time away, I tailor each lesson to your individual goals and musical interests.

I welcome students interested in both traditional academic repertoire and alternative musical traditions. We can explore classical and contemporary repertoire, orchestral playing, early music, improvisation, or folk traditions including Spanish/Flamenco, Irish/Celtic, and Eastern European/Balkan music.

What a Lesson with Me Looks Like

In my studio, I guide students through a structured yet flexible process I call “The 4 Steps to Learn a New Piece.” The method approaches music through different channels—visual, motor, linguistic, and expressive—helping students understand and internalize what they play rather than simply repeating it.

I also use memorization as a creative tool: not only for performance security, but as a way to develop deeper musical expression, confidence, and connection during live performance.

Depending on your goals, lessons can include:

Flute, piccolo, and alto flute
Tone, technique, articulation, and breath control
Classical/academic repertoire and folk traditions
Contemporary and early music
Orchestral excerpts and audition preparation
Practice with backing tracks to develop style, rhythm, and timing
Custom warm-ups and technique exercises
Tonal and modal theory, solfège, and ear training
Improvisation and creative musicianship
Singing and pitch development for instrumentalists
Performance preparation, memorization, and stage confidence

I teach in both English and Spanish, online and in person depending on location.

My goal is to help you build strong foundations while developing your own musical voice. Learning should be progressive and challenging, but it should also be creative and enjoyable.
