About Barnaby
I am a professional musician, composer, teacher and researcher based in South East London. As a composer, I have written contemporary works that have been performed in the UK and abroad, as well as commercial commissions. As a professional flautist and saxophonist I have played in a variety of ensembles and genres, ranging from classical orchestras, jazz big bands, and popular music groups. I have also played gigs on the UK and European festival scene, playing at the likes of Wilderness, Boomtown and Larmer Tree.
I teach flute and saxophone to all ages and abilities, as well as music theory and composition. I strive to help my students develop their performance technique, musical understanding and unique artistic voice. I teach the fundamentals in a way that focuses on the physicality of playing a wind instrument, helping students to control and strengthen their posture, dexterity and diaphragm. I not only teach students how to play, but how to understand what they are playing, placing it the wider context of music theory and historic context, in a fun and engaging way.
I teach classical, jazz and pop, and I am very familar with the grade exam syllabus, but I can also help students achieve musical goals that lie outside of these syllabuses. I aim to ensure that students never view music as dots on a page, or as a chore to be overcome, but a creative process in which they are actively involved.

Barney has been working with our small school for over 2 years now. He teaches A Level Music to an autistic student with whom he has developed an excellent relationship. Barney is punctual, efficient and very professional.
I had three months worth of lessons with Barnaby alongside studying for my degree in a leisurely capacity. We followed on from where I had left practising with previous teachers and enjoyed the momentum that lessons provided and barnaby's enthusiasm for music radiated and I thoroughly enjoyed the weekly lessons.
