About Ella
As a high-performing student who went through school with later-diagnosed learning difficulties, I believe this has given me unique strengths as a tutor. For example, I have the ability to empathise with and understand students who feel as though they are struggling at school. Despite achieving 4* in my A levels, for a lot of my secondary and primary schooling I was never a "top" student. Therefore, while my academic record evidences my strong knowledge base from which I can teach, I will also share realistic study techniques which helped me on my own journey, from being in bottom sets at school to getting into the University of Cambridge.

My strengths as a tutor lie in my holistic approach. For example, while I can teach advanced specialised knowledge in certain subjects, I also aim to consider my student's unique learning styles and how to teach accordingly, as well as building study techniques to provide the greatest opportunity for success. My personal academic strengths lie particularly in the philosophy of religion, the anthropology and sociology of modern religion, and literary analysis. In my first year University examinations, I received a starred 1st in my philosophy exam and a 1st in my social science of religion exam, which were all in person. In my second-year examinations, I received a starred first in my 'Theology and Literature' dissertation.
I have 5 main areas in which I think my skill set can be of particular use for tutoring.
1. I have experience with primary school level tutoring in Maths and English. Here, I endeavour to really understand the learning style of the child to explain concepts to them in an accessible way which they may not be receiving in the classroom. As a student who struggled academically at primary school with undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD, I also try to create a safe environment which is free of shame. With this attention I have found that my students were able to ask questions that they were afraid or embarrassed of asking in more formal settings. I believe this helped to create results in the classroom as my student's gained confidence and personal command over their knowledge and learning.
2. I have experience work as teaching assistant in over 10 special needs schools in London where I have primarily with non-verbal children. I have also provided private tuition to non-verbal children. With the guidance of experienced SEN teachers, I learnt how to engage children who had a range of individualised learning requirements. I believe this has strengthened my ability to understand many forms of communication, allowing me to be more attuned to a child’s unspoken boundaries/comfort levels.
3. At GCSE level I can provide tutoring in English literature, language, religious studies, philosophy, government and politics, drama. Having achieved high results in these exams whilst coping with undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD I have developed effective study techniques which I think can be helpful for all types of candidates. I can also provide guidance on exam technique and how to effectivity use extra time.
4. At A level I can provide tuition in English Literature, religious studies and philosophy and Politics and Government, Drama (AS), as well as an Extended Personal Qualification (EPQ). While I can tutor for all specifications, I will be of particular use with AQA English Literature, OCR Religious Studies, Pearson Politics and Government and AQA EPQ. I sat these exams in person in 2019 and achieved As in all of them. Again, as a high-performing student who has learning difficulties, I can offer specific guidance and help to students who struggle with study techniques, focus, motivation or confidence issues.
5. I also provide Oxbridge preparation sessions to students interested in my subject area. In a context where I had more specialised knowledge, I have learnt to strike a crucial balance between providing essential guidance whilst facilitating the student's own articulation of ideas. Having experienced this process, and been successful, I can provide practice interview questions, subject mentoring with recommended readings, as well as personal statement advice.
