About Bosun
My name is Bosun Chow, and I am an undergraduate at Monash University majoring in Composition & Music Technology and Philosophy.
I focus on teaching music composition and theory because I have been exactly where many students find themselves: stuck behind technical hurdles that feel discouraging. I understand the difficulties of these long hours of experimentation that often lead to burnout and self-doubt rather than a finished piece.
My approach is rooted in the belief that music theory should not be viewed as a set of rigid rules to be obeyed, but as a map of established practices that guides your creative choices . Having experienced these struggles myself, I want to help you skip the frustration of reinventing the wheel.
Mastering these theory is really about giving yourself more time to actually create. My goal is to help you build a foundation that supports your vision, not restrict it. By clearing those technical hurdles, you’ll find the clarity to make the music you want to hear.

My Teaching Approach: Theory, Composition, or Both
I believe that music theory is the universal language of music, but how we learn it depends entirely on your goals. Whether you are looking for standalone theory tutoring or want to dive into composition, I tailor my methods to fit your specific path.
Here is how I structure our sessions:
Tailored Integration: I meet you where you are. If you want to focus purely on Music Theory, we will dive deep into the mechanics of how music is built. If your interest is in Composition, we will integrate theory as a practical tool to help you finish your pieces. While every student’s journey starts differently, my goal is for everyone to eventually master the same core theoretical foundations.
Theory Through Application: Regardless of your focus, I don’t believe in abstract learning. We will use improvisation, "mini-pieces," or song sketches to see theory in action. In my experience, using a concept is the only way to truly "own" it and ensure it stays with you throughout your musical journey.
Post-Lesson Support: To keep your momentum going, I provide a written summary after every session. This includes curated resources and targeted exercises so you have a clear, manageable path forward between our meetings.
Flexible Tools: You don't need a professional studio to begin. While a keyboard (even a basic 61-key model) is highly recommended for building a "bodily" relationship with music, you can achieve incredible results using free digital notation software like MuseScore. I am happy to help you get set up with these tools.
A Supportive Environment: I welcome students from late primary (ages 10+) through to adults. I find this age range works best for the conceptual and creative nature of my lessons. While I am currently focusing on beginner lessons in both composition and theory, I am always open to discussing specific projects or unique musical questions you may have.
