About Keziah

Teaching saxophone is a dynamic and deeply rewarding process that involves balancing rigorous technical training with fostering each student’s personal voice and creative expression. I begin with essential fundamentals such as breath support, embouchure, finger dexterity, posture, and tone production, which lay the groundwork for a healthy and expressive saxophone technique. Intonation and articulation receive ongoing focus because they are vital to shaping a nuanced and compelling sound. From the earliest lessons, improvisation is integrated through exercises that build confidence and musical intuition, enabling students to experiment freely with scales, rhythms, and phrasing. I ensure that music theory is presented in context, so students see its relevance in understanding harmony, scales, and chord progressions as tools for improvisation and interpretation. Repertoire selection is tailored to each student’s musical interests—whether jazz, blues, pop, or classical—making the learning process motivating and meaningful. Together, we set practical goals and create structured, yet flexible, practice routines to foster steady progress and maintain enthusiasm. Technology enhances our work, with recording apps, metronomes, and backing tracks used regularly to promote self-evaluation and sharpen skills. A highlight of my teaching career was witnessing a student blossom from tentative beginner to confident improviser, performing original solos with poise. Ultimately, my goal is to nurture saxophonists who are not only technically proficient but also passionate, versatile musicians capable of expressing their unique musical identities.

As a saxophone instructor, I believe that technical skills and musical expression are equally essential for creating Meaningful and enjoyable performances. My lessons focus on building a strong technical foundation, including breath control, embouchure formation, articulation, and finger agility, while nurturing students’ creativity through improvisation and composition. I incorporate theory, sight-reading, and ear training early to support a deeper understanding of music and enhance improvisational abilities.

I personalize lessons to each student’s musical tastes and goals, whether that involves exploring jazz standards, funk grooves, pop melodies, or classical repertoire. Improvisation is emphasized as a fun and empowering way to develop musical intuition and confidence. Technology is integrated throughout lessons using recording tools, play-along tracks, and slow practice apps to help students analyze their playing and stay motivated.

I also coach students on performance skills such as stage presence, overcoming nerves, and effective communication with audiences and fellow musicians. My teaching style is supportive and encouraging, providing a safe space for students to experiment, make mistakes, and grow. One memorable success was helping a student transition from classical saxophone playing to jazz improvisation, which opened new creative doors for them. My goal is to inspire each student to develop their technical abilities and artistic voice, fostering a lifelong love of music.
