About Danijel

I am a FIDE Master with two International Master norms and a peak classical FIDE rating of 2380. I have over 30 years of competitive chess experience and more than 10 years of experience coaching children, teenagers and adults.

My tournament achievements include winning the 2018 BrainGames rapid tournament in Fürstenfeldbruck, ahead of a field that included six grandmasters and 174 players from 10 countries.Also won Lignano Sabbiadoro 2017 (IM norm) , Rabac Open 2020, finished 5th and 10th (IM norm) at Hit Open 2018,2019-Tournament with many titled players in including 10 GMs and 14 countries . My peak FIDE ratings are 2438 in rapid and 2452 in blitz.

What I enjoy most about coaching is helping someone understand an idea that previously seemed confusing — and then seeing them use it in their own games. My students have included beginners, ambitious club players and young competitors who have won medals at Slovenian national youth championships.

For me, chess is also a creative pursuit: your pieces are like an orchestra, and the challenge is to make them work together. I enjoy sharing that side of the game alongside the practical skills needed to play well.

My approach is patient, thoughtful and adapted to the person in front of me. Whether you want to compete seriously or simply enjoy chess with greater understanding, you are welcome.

About the lesson

Do you sometimes reach a position and struggle to find a plan? Or understand an engine’s recommended move without understanding why it works?

My lessons focus on developing your own chess judgement: assessing positions, recognising your opponent’s intentions and choosing moves with a clear purpose.

We work at a pace suited to your level, interests and goals. Depending on what you need, lessons can include:

• Analysing your games to identify recurring mistakes and areas for improvement.
• Studying instructive master games to understand strategy and how to build a plan.
• Improving calculation and recognising tactical opportunities.
• Understanding the ideas behind your openings.
• Building confidence in practical endgames.
• Playing thematic training games to put new ideas into practice.

I explain my thought process throughout: what I notice, which candidate moves I consider and why I prefer one plan over another. You are encouraged to ask questions and share your own ideas.

Complete beginners are welcome. We can start with the fundamentals and gradually build towards more confident, independent play. For experienced players, we can focus on the specific weaknesses holding back your progress.

Lessons are online and taught in English. If you already play regularly, you are welcome to bring a few recent games to our first meeting.

I offer a free 30-minute introductory session so we can discuss your goals, explore your current level and see whether my teaching style suits you.
