About Agil

I am a FIDE Master from Baku, Azerbaijan, and I have been coaching online full-time for around fifteen years, with more than 100 students so far. My FIDE ratings are 2508 rapid and 2411 standard (FIDE ID (concealed information)). In 2011 I won the World Under-16 Championship, I was European Under-14 Champion, and I have a silver medal from the Chess Olympiad. I have also won international open tournaments in Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain.

I already teach students in Australia every week, including the winner of the 2025 Victorian Women's Chess Championship, so New Zealand after-school and early-evening hours are hours I am already working.

Most players who come to me do not have a knowledge problem. They have a planning problem: they know openings, they solve puzzles, and then the theory runs out around move fifteen and they have no idea what to do. That is what I teach.

About the lesson

Every lesson starts with your own recent games, especially the ones you lost. From those I teach the four questions to ask in any position: What is my worst piece? What does the pawn structure tell me? What does my opponent want? Which exchange can I force?

The aim is not that you play well while I am in the room. It is that you play well when I am not.

I work with complete beginners and with rated tournament players, one to one or in small groups of four to six. Lessons are in English, on Zoom with a shared board, and every lesson ends with written homework.

After-school and early-evening slots suit me well, so lessons sit in a normal part of your week and stay there.

Packages: 5 lessons, or 10 lessons with the tenth free - you pay for nine and we play ten. The first 30 minutes are free, so you can see how I work before deciding anything.

Perfect! Agil reviewed my online games and identified why I was losing strong positions, and guided me through what strategies I needed to adopt, and how to do that. I look forward to more sessions with him!

Agil's response
Chris engages seriously with the material and is clearly interested in understanding positions rather than memorising them.

Disciplined, attentive and precise in his questions.
Chris approaches the game with the seriousness it rewards, and I look forward to continuing our work.

Agil's response
A pleasure to teach Mayukh. He listens carefully, asks good questions and is not afraid to think for himself at the board - exactly the qualities that make a young player improve. Thank you, Shikha, for the warm and easy communication throughout. Looking forward to the sessions ahead.

Agil's response
Jan came to the lessons with his own games and real questions, which makes the work productive from the very first minute. He takes feedback well and is willing to change a habit rather than defend it - not something every player can do. It was a pleasure to work together, Jan. Best of luck with your games.

Agil's response
Isaac was a motivated student who genuinely wants to understand the reasons behind the moves rather than just memorise them. That attitude is what carries a player forward, and it made our lessons enjoyable to teach. Thank you for the sessions, Isaac - keep working and the results will come.
