About Matthew

I am a friendly and enthusiastic teacher with over twenty years' experience. I have spent a lot of time working with all sorts of students, aged from under 6 to over 50. These have included children and adult beginners, students with playing problems, post grade 8 students looking for new challenges as well as older people who are looking for help learning music. I love inspiring people to get involved with music-making and I have spent most of my life thinking about how best to help people learn and improve. If you are hoping to start playing a brass instrument or are looking for a new teacher then I'd love to hear from you. Most of my students are trumpet or cornet players, but I also teach orchestral and band conducting. I am happy to help students prepare for jazz or classical grades if they wish but it's fine if they'd rather not. Many of my students have achieved distinctions in their exams and all my students gain at least a pass. As well as working privately, in the past I have worked as a brass tutor for Bromley Youth Music Trust and London Borough of Newham. As well as trumpet playing, I completed a master's degree in orchestral conducting at the Royal College of Music, and much of my work involves directing community orchestras, bands, and choirs. I think it is important that the instrument is a way into learning all kinds of interesting things about music so I try to cover a broad range of different ideas in lessons. I don't just stick to 'classical' music; I think it's great to explore lots of different things from the very beginning. Lessons can incorporate improvisation, playing by ear, and music theory as well as playing technique. Lessons are tailored to the individual student's needs and interests. I teach on Saturdays at my house in north London, or online. In some circumstances I am able to arrange lessons on other days. As a performer I have played and directed a lot of different music in all sorts of groups including: orchestra, brass band, wind band, big band, small jazz groups, big and small brass groups, street bands and pop bands. I'm also an experienced soloist and I have given many recital and concerto performances. I have experienced and overcome a lot of problems in my own playing, and am keen to help others resolve problems that they experience. Alongside teaching and performing I also have a lot of experience working in schools, leading ensembles, delivering workshops, and teaching groups of children. I have a clear DBS certificate from 2019 and I have completed safeguarding training at basic and organisational lead levels. I have been involved in music-making and playing the trumpet for 30 years and it has been brilliant fun. Whether you just want to play a bit in your spare time or take it more seriously, I can show you how to get the most out of it and have the best experience!

My lessons are usually 30 or 60 minutes and are for anyone of any age or level. They are structured as follows: 1. Catch up, discussion of recent practice, rehearsals, and performances. 2. Basic warm-up. I always start lessons off with some simple work on improving breathing and sound quality. Getting this aspect of playing to work well is the foundation and most other things flow naturally from it. This is excellent work to do with all students, regardless of age or level. I would ordinarily spend ten minutes of a 1-hour lesson on this work. 3. Technical work. This section of the lesson varies quite considerably depending on the student's age, level, and objectives. The more serious and ambitious the student, the more important this is. It can include scales, drills, and exercises, all of which are selected based on the challenges of the music the student is currently learning. This section would normally be only about five minutes of a 1-hour lesson, with the student given clear instructions on how to practise each exercise between lessons. 4. Music. This is the most important part of the lesson. We play musical instruments in order to play music, so it’s really important that we spend the majority of our time doing so! Playing music is the best route to improving our instrumental playing and for most people is more fun than technical work. I usually recommend specific pieces that will help each individual’s development in different areas. Learning a piece of music covers a lot of interesting things beyond the basic technical aspects of playing: what the piece is about, when and where it was written and by whom, and how to go about performing it effectively. This section is about forty minutes of a 1-hour lesson. 5. Recap. At the end of each lesson I go over the key points that have been discussed, and I give clear instructions of what should be practised in the upcoming week. I studied classical and jazz trumpet playing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was also fortunate to study with Kristian Steenstrup, professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark. Many of his ideas, which are derived from those of the great American brass pedagogue Arnold Jacobs, are employed in my work.
