About Debbie

Hi, I'm Debbie - an experienced and successful A-level Psychology Examiner and Private Tutor with 15-plus years’ experience teaching undergraduate psychology as a Head of Psychology, Head of Science, and Psychology Lead Practitioner in grammar and independent schools, delivering outstanding academic outcomes for A-level and GCSE Psychology cohorts.

I have an MSc (Distinction) in Applied Psychology, a BA Hons (1st Class) in Psychology, and UK Qualified Teacher Status. Plus real world experience of psychological practice as a former Social Psychologist - I absolutely love all things 'Psychology'!

About the lesson

I start with an informal assessment of each student's current subject-specific needs and their wider post-secondary aspirations - my role being to do everything I possibly can towards goal achievement.
My teaching style is personalised to maximise each student's motivation, subject confidence, the current gap between their ‘working at’ and target and/or desired grade, any apprehension they might have about the tutoring process, and of course, all special educational needs and special circumstances that might have impacted their progress to date. During tuition, parents/carers are welcome to be in touch/kept informed as much or as little as they prefer - as a minimum I share each tutee's Tutoring Plan with parents/carers, which is a live document that I update with homework, progress notes and resources on an ongoing basis.
The summer months provide the perfect opportunity for Yr12 and Yr10 students to plug any gaps in their subject knowledge and to master the skills and synoptic understanding of course content that will be required of them during the final year of their studies. I offer lessons flexibly, as students have different requirements - some will be looking to brush up on specific units - quite commonly, Research Methods and Approaches - or to master skills such as their PEELed paragraphs or essay technique. Others might prefer to revisit everything from this past year to ensure they start next year on a more secure footing.

In my tutoring, I improve students’ grades through focusing on:

- Identifying knowledge gaps and surface level understanding
- Detailed working understanding of research methods
- Effective application of studies & theories to stimulus material
- Essay structure and evaluation technique
- Exam technique, including planning and timings for each paper
- Effective use of past papers, mark schemes & examiners' reports
- Revision - including spaced learning to avoid last-minute cramming!

Students can choose to have their tutoring online via Zoom or in person (the latter is available for students located within an approx 10 mile radius of postcode HP2).
