About Sarah

I am a patient and passionate private violin teacher who loves working with children. I have been teaching violin students of all ages for 15+years. My area of expertise has always been teaching/introducing the violin to students as well as to help them develop/explore their love for music while having fun. I am a registered RCM teacher, a member of the BCRMTA (BC Registered Music Teachers' Association) and I have a Bachelors Degree in Violin Performance from Western Washington University. I have also studied in the extension diploma program at Mannes the New School with the renowned violin teacher Sally Thomas in Manhattan, New York. I teach both online and in-person lessons using different teaching methods (ex. RCM and Suzuki) to adjust to every students’ needs as everyone has a different learning pace and understands things differently. I teach according to what the student wants and needs, both for hobby and for exams as well. I’ve helped and prepped students get into the Byng Arts program, Crofton House School, Orchestras (VAMJS, RDYO junior strings/ senior strings /symphony orchestra and VYSO), won gold at Kiwanis festivals, won gold at BCCM competitions and I’ve also helped students accomplish their RCM exams with first-class honours (from levels 2-9) and received the RCM regional gold medal as well. I do not push my students to do exams or competitions unless they want to. My goal is to become more involved with each student’s musical growth through teaching, learning and having fun together with them.

About the lesson

In our lesson, depending on the student’s level it will consist of an introduction to the instrument, finding the good sounding points/ correct posture to hold and play the instrument, master the basic techniques and exploring/ learning how to express different musical ideas through the violin to perfect the piece that the student is working on while having fun. In my opinion, the most important part is to inspire the students to develop their love for music/violin while having an enjoyable learning experience.
