About Albert

Mambo, vipi? My name is Albert. I’m a Swahili tutor with years of teaching experience in the university classroom and one-on-one settings, and I’d love to help you reach your language goals.

I was born and raised in Tanzania, and I’ve also spent over 20 years living in different parts of the UK — so I have a deep understanding of both East African and Western cultures. This helps me explain not just the language, but the why behind expressions, communication styles, and cultural context.

I’ve taught Swahili at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, and during an intensive summer course in Italy, working with learners at different levels. I’ve also taught students of all ages privately, helping them build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Beyond academic Swahili, I stay up to date with fast-changing everyday Swahili — especially street Swahili from Dar es Salaam — so you’ll learn language that’s relevant, current, and practical for real conversations. Whether you want to chat with locals, travel with confidence, connect with family, or advance your career, I’ll help you get there.

Alongside Swahili, I’ve worked as a Senior Tutor at the University of Edinburgh since 2016, leading tutorials, helping students succeed, and mentoring new tutors. I’ve been nominated multiple times for the Best Student Who Tutors Award, the Best Teacher Award, and was shortlisted for Student Tutor of the Year 2023 — recognition I’m proud of and that reflects my passion for teaching.

I tailor my lessons to you — your interests, your level, and your goals — and create a friendly, supportive space where you can learn at your pace and feel confident using Swahili in real life.
Karibu sana.

I tailor every lesson to your goals, level, and learning style. I use a mix of techniques — from conversational practice and real‑world dialogues to structured grammar and vocabulary work — so that you’re learning language you can actually use in real situations. I also include cultural insights and up‑to‑date everyday Swahili (including modern Dar es Salaam street usage) to make your learning relevant and practical.

My lessons are interactive and engaging: we’ll speak a lot, work with authentic materials, and I’ll give you clear feedback and encouragement so you feel confident improving every session. I also break complex ideas into bite‑size steps that fit your pace and we build on what you already know.

A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, but I’m flexible if you’d like longer sessions or a different rhythm — just let me know what works best for you.
