About Brett
I am a highly experienced academic English tutor with a proven track record of supporting international students, particularly those from China and Thailand, as they prepare for and progress through UK university study. Over the past decade I have taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing tailored support on pre-sessional programmes as well as in-sessional courses once students are enrolled. My guidance has helped learners not only achieve the IELTS scores they need, but also develop the critical thinking, academic writing, and communication skills essential for success at university. My academic background is in Politics, and I regularly tutor students in related subjects such as International Relations and History. This subject expertise allows me to give practical, content-based support alongside language development — from essay planning and structuring arguments, to research, referencing, and presenting ideas persuasively. Before moving fully into higher education, I gained professional experience in the corporate world, working in the field of financial services with PwC. I specialise in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and Business English, but my background also extends to History, Politics, and related social sciences. This allows me not only to improve your English, but also to guide you in structuring arguments, writing essays, and engaging critically with subject content. A typical session lasts 60 minutes and blends strategy, practice, and feedback. I use clear models, real-world examples, and practical exercises so that progress is measurable and directly applicable to your studies or career. Beyond language improvement, I provide application support, pre-university preparation, and in-sessional guidance once you are enrolled. Many students continue with me as a mentor throughout their university careers, receiving help with coursework, presentations, and dissertation writing. I am a DELTA-qualified English tutor with more than ten years of experience at UK universities, working with both undergraduate and postgraduate students. My approach is supportive but demanding: I set clear targets, challenge you to improve, and ensure you walk away with the tools to perform at your best in academic or professional contexts.
