About John
I am an experienced university lecturer, Course Leader and External Examiner with over eight years' experience working in Higher Education. I currently lead undergraduate provision at BIMM University and have previously taught at the University of South Wales and Cardiff Metropolitan University.
I hold an MA in English & Creative Writing and a PGCE/PCET in Adult Learning & Training, alongside an HND in Business & Finance. My academic career has included teaching, dissertation and final project supervision, curriculum development, assessment design, marking and moderation. I am also currently an External Examiner for the MA Songwriting & Production programme at the University of South Wales.
Alongside academia, I have spent much of my career working professionally within the music, events and creative industries. I continue to work as a songwriter and recording artist, which means I understand both the academic and practical sides of creative education.
Most importantly, I enjoy teaching. I aim to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable discussing work they may be struggling with, asking questions and developing their ideas. University work can sometimes feel unnecessarily complicated; I like helping students make sense of it and recognise that they often know more than they think they do.

My approach is practical, supportive and focused on the individual student. I start by understanding where you are with your work, what your assessment requires and where you feel you need support. We then work together to identify clear, achievable ways to move your work forward.
For dissertation, research project and academic writing tutorials, I can help you develop and refine your research question, plan and structure your work, strengthen critical analysis, approach literature and research effectively, understand assessment criteria and respond constructively to feedback from your university tutor or supervisor. My aim is not simply to improve one piece of work, but to help you understand why changes are needed so that you become a more confident and independent student.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes and are conversational and collaborative rather than lecture-based. I'm also happy to work through assessment briefs, plans, extracts of your writing or tutor feedback during our sessions.
I have over eight years' experience in Higher Education and currently work as a University Course Leader, teaching and supporting undergraduate students across all three years of degree-level study. I have extensive experience of project and dissertation supervision, assessment, marking, moderation, curriculum design and academic quality. I am also an External Examiner for an MA in Songwriting & Production and hold an MA in English & Creative Writing and a PGCE/PCET in Adult Learning & Training.
My lessons are particularly suited to undergraduate and Master's students, including students working on dissertations, final projects, essays, reports and research projects. My academic and professional specialisms include Business, Event Management, Music and the Creative Industries, but I can also support students from other disciplines who need help developing their academic writing, research and critical-thinking skills.
