About Benjamin

Through serious study of the violin, I aim to help my students appreciate music, acquire skills that they can be proud of, learn about the rewards of consistent practice, and express themselves. I’ve worked with students of all ages, backgrounds, and prior experience. While I generally start students with the Suzuki method, I find that supplementing with other repertoire, especially music that interests the student, is an essential part of teaching musicality and emotional expression. Every student is different and it’s important to me to help students develop a love of the violin and music in addition to establishing proper technique.

Teaching violin has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. Working with new students reminds me of my first experiences with the instrument and brings back all of the joy and wonder that I felt when I picked up a violin for the first time. Watching students progress and develop as musicians with their own styles and interests is amazing and I’m proud to be able to pass on what I know to another generation of young violinists, as well as those who have found music later in life.

I started teaching the violin to the younger kids in my church congregation. Parents would hear me perform in church and then ask me if I would teach their children. I loved teaching the violin, so I've continued to do that.

I’ve been studying the violin for over a decade with several excellent violinists. I’ve participated in masterclasses with world-class violinists like Seattle Symphony Concertmaster Simon James and Terry Durbin. In high school, I competed in several local competitions, earning high scores both as a soloist and as a member of a small ensemble. I started and played in a piano trio, which performed in concert. As Assistant Concertmaster of my high school orchestra, I led the group to 1st place in several state and regional competitions and festivals. As a leader in that orchestra, I frequently led sectionals at the director’s discretion, in which I instructed over a dozen violinists. I’m currently a pre-M.D.-Ph.D. student at Brigham Young University double majoring in Biophysics and Neuroscience and minoring in Chemistry and Music. Although my focus is in biomedical research, I’m an active member of the BYU School of Music. I’ve performed with the BYU Symphony and I currently perform as part of the BYU University Orchestra. I study with several violin professors in the School of Music in the Galamian methods of technique.

About the lesson

Although some of my students started out as true beginners, the majority of them have had at least some exposure to the violin or to other instruments. I will typically ask those students to play the last thing that they worked on and identify some of the key technique changes that we need to work on. We’ll talk about the student’s goals, what kind of music they’re interested in playing, and what their history is with the violin. Then we’ll come up with a plan together to get the most out of lessons.

I’ve worked with all types of students from elementary schoolers who have never touched a violin before to adults who are excited to learn a new skill or who want to get back into the violin after a prolonged break. I meet the students wherever they are and help them work toward whatever goals they’ve set for themselves.

I charge $35-40 per hour-long lesson and half that for young students who only have 30-minute lessons.
