About Cynthia

I would love to share my passion for learning, playing, and performing with you! A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, I bring music theory and history into teaching musical interpretation, which gives my students a holistic music education.

I am a strong believer that solid technique paired with skilled artistic choices are interdependent: we can't have one without the other! My students learn how to utilize both skill areas to become compelling musicians.

All ages (including adult learners) and skill levels are welcome!

I have always loved to teach, from music to language learning. This passion of mine started in middle school, when I first took classes in music pedagogy. I have continued to grow since, and love teaching even more!

I am certified for completing teaching training from the American String Teachers Association. Also, during my education at the Curtis Institute of Music, I studied pedagogy with Christine Witkowski.

About the lesson

The first lesson is all about getting to know each other. If you have any experience with the instrument, I'll ask you to come to the lesson with music you have already learned and are comfortable playing for me. The idea is that I'll get an idea for your skill level, musical learning goals, and how to proceed with future lessons. You can also get to know my teaching style as I give you instruction on the pieces of music you decide to bring.

Since each student is different and has a unique learning style, you can expect lessons with me to be tailored to you and what works best for you. From the first lesson, we will talk about short- and long-term goals and a repertoire of music that would help you get to where you envision yourself in the future (the time frame will vary from several months to a year to several years of lessons, depending on whatever you want out of our lessons).

I have worked with all ages and skill levels of students: from children in elementary school to adult learners; from beginners to advanced players. Everyone who wants to learn is welcome!

I would say that it's okay if you don't find the best fit in a teacher the first time you try lessons. It's completely normal to try a few out if you don't feel confident at first with the teacher-student fit. The first few lessons are a great way for both the teacher and the student to get to know each other and how to work together. In those lessons, a good thing to look for is how the teacher explains or shows a concept—if by the end of the lesson you can walk away with new knowledge, or ways to tackle musical issues you're facing, that's a success.

*While these are great questions to ask yourself as a starting point, it's okay to bring questions to your teacher as well. It's also okay to not have all your thoughts fully fleshed out—part of my job is to help sort through those things with you.

Details

Yes, I typically charge $45-65 per hour (depending on skill level: $45 for beginner, $65 for advanced) if teaching online through video. I add a travel fee if you would like me to drive to you, which is dependent on how far you are from me (this takes care of the cost of gas to and from your residence).
