About Mark

I teach using a variety of educational methods and materials. I have an organized step by step approach that will help students play to the best of their ability. The youngest student I have taken for private lessons is 3 years old, but most young people are ready to begin by age 5. The best compliment I ever receive is when a student goes away to college and when they come home, they call me for lessons.

Learning to play a stringed instrument is very difficult. I enjoy seeing students grow and develop during their time with me. Whether it is the student that worked hard to just be able to move his fingers independently so he could use a computer or tablet, or the student that became principal of the Youth Symphony, when a student accomplishes what they thought impossible the joy and surprise on his or her face is the greatest reward.

I was asked to help a non-major college student prepare for his jury. It was fun and we both learned from the experience.

About the lesson

The process varies from student to student. Some prefer a method book which is straight forward. Many like to a more literature centered approach. Others like a combination of the two. How I teach depends on how much structure a student needs or wants.

In 33 years of teaching I have seen all types of students.

You must make the commitment to yourself and be willing to work on your instrument a minimum of 5 days a week. If you are willing to make that commitment you will be successful.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When I wanted to learn to play, my mom asked me if I was willing to practice before I went to the swimming pool. I said I would always practice before I went to the pool or to Kings Island.

The big question today is "are you willing to give up 30 minutes of video games to to practice?"
