About Silas

I wanted to play the trumpet from when I was very young. When I first got into the school band, I was told that I couldn't play trumpet and got stuck on clarinet for a year and a half. I found a trumpet and figured out how to play it until I switched to trumpet full time. Because of this experience, I am passionate about teaching people to do things that they wouldn't be able to otherwise. I work hard to craft my teaching to each individual student, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

I love the opportunity to work with other people to create something beautiful. This happens in ensembles, recitals, and even in lessons with beginning students. The ability to work with students to help them achieve something that they could not before is truly something special.

I got started in school, especially by working with marching bands. I also started by leading trumpet sectionals in a variety of contexts/ensembles.

I will be graduating from Cedarville University in May of 2021 with a Bachelors of Music Degree in Trumpet Performance. I have taken classes specifically in Instrumental Pedagogy.

About the lesson

I like to hear new students play, so I can see where they are at. Then I try to get to know the student as best as possible, especially in terms of what they want to do with the trumpet. Then I craft my lessons to be the most beneficial for them as a musician.

I have primarily worked with students in a marching band context, but also in wind bands, orchestras, and jazz bands.

Do trial lessons. Many teachers will be willing to do a single lesson as a trial for free or for a reduced cost. Try out a few different teachers and see what you think will be best. Also, ask your teachers to play for you. Be mindful of the fact that some people are better teachers than performers, and not all great performers are great teachers. That being said, make sure they can play.

I recently gave a recital as a part of my degree program. It was full of music that I love to play, and was very enjoyable to present.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think carefully about what the you as the student want to do with the instrument. Your teacher will be able to help you the best if you can clearly articulate what you want to do with the instrument.
