Get to know each other, establish goals, hopes, aspirations etc.
Determine the students skill level(non-swimmer, beginner, advanced, competitive, long/short distance)
Proceed accordingly keeping the above aspects in mind
Most importantly, have fun and become more comfortable in the water!
I have worked with students of all ages, from infants to people well into adulthood. It is never too late to jump into the water;)
Go with someone you are comfortable being around & being in close proximity to. Teaching/ learning to swim can be an intimate experience so it's important to be comfortable with your instructor.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
