About Deborah

My name is Deborah and I have been writing songs for over 20 years. I am studio recording artist and performer, a member of the Songwriters Guild of America, the 2019 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Showcase artist and I run an anual live songwriting workshop called Now Hear This, which is now in it's 5th year.

Most importantly I absolutely love the craft of songwriting.

I help writers understand the anatomy of a song and how to fine tune the most vital elements to make your song stand out.

I began studying the art of songwriting as an undergrad at SUNY Geneseo. I worked with the musical theater director to create original songs for my live theater peformances and learned the nuance of how songs tell a story.

I moved to NYC at age 22 and began a career as a folk musician playing the bars and clubs in the Village. I have produced two full length albums of original music and toured the US from coast to coast performing live. I have written songs for film, and live theater, as well as contributed to several Off-Broadway musical performances.

My current songwriting workshop is in it's final week and I'm taking on 10 new students for the Winter/Spring of 2020.

My latest album, Hearing In the Bardo, is streaming on all major music sites, including Spotify, iTunes and Tidal.

I love helping my students gain clarity on their own creative instincts and find their unique voice that will help them stand out in a sea of artists.

I believe we all have a singular and unique voice, and a story to tell. I enjoy working with people to translate that unique story and voice into music that will change lives and help them soar creatively.

I took a series of amazing songwriting workshops and realized I had the knack for quick writing and editing and wanted to share the experience with peers. I started Now Hear This 4 years ago to host a creative community with like minded songwriters and it has grown into a vast community of co-writers and students.

I enjoy helping others succeed at reaching their dreams.

About the lesson

I ask every student to send me a recording of any recent work they have created, even if it's a voice memo, to get an understanding of where they are starting from.

I offer a 6 Session Course which is broken down into 6 lessons, which take place every 2 weeks. At the end of each lesson, you will receive an assignment to be completed by a specific deadline. In between sessions, you'll turn in your assignment so I can review it before our next meeting. I will provide you will email feedback which we can discuss on the next call.

The 6 lessons are broken down into the following aspects of songwriting:

- Anatomy of a Song (basics)

- Creative Voicing

- Finding YOUR Writing Voice

- Rhythm & Melody Study

- Storytelling

- Lyrics - Connecting Purpose to Your Words

I give instruction on traditional forms and styles of writing including examples and we'll work together on exercises that illustrate the above techniques.

I ask my student to complete an assignment by a specific deadline. I give each student 2 weeks to complete the assignment and then we meet to review the work, make constructive clean ups and edits, discuss the choices made and ways to strengthen the song.

If a student wants to continue to work on a specific song throughout each session, we can focus on the aspects of that particular song. If you are new, starting from scratch, we can create new songs each session.

In addtion to the craft of songwriting, I can advise on notation and recording techniques as well as copywriting, publishing and licensing.

I hired Deborah to help my 10 & 12-year-old kids write a song and it was so fun! They spent a morning coming up with ideas and lyrics and by afternoon they had already worked out a catchy melody and were singing a new song together. The creative process was engaging and the kids were so proud of themselves. The performed it on our family vacation and it was quite a hit. We are still singing our song!

Details

I charge $40 per hour lesson for the first 6 lessons. I recommend lessons every 2 weeks so there is time enough to work on the assignment in between.

Lessons can be conducted in person in Brooklyn, or over Zoom.

Once I have established a project with a student, we often don't need a ton of time for check-ins and we'll move to a 1/2 hour lesson structure so we can fine tune specifics on a song.

If a student wants to continue working together in a less formal way after 3 months of one-on-one coaching, they have the option to join my online Songwriting Group where I offer theme-specific assignements on a monthly basis for $10/month.
