About Baylee

I’ve always deeply valued enjoyment in the process of learning and creating music. While theory and technique are equally valuable, I often times feel our culture has placed too much emphasis on perfecting ideas and skills. Music is a space of emotional refuge, a personal expression, and an experience for its admirers. As a student of music in past years, it was teachers and instructors that showed me the beauty and source of solace that music is. It was these teachers and instructors that continually kept my interest in music strong throughout the difficult periods of advanced theory and technical training. This is the teacher I inspire and practice to be.

Whether it’s aural skills, finger or vocal technique, theory knowledge, repetition practices, lyrical and poetic structure in songwriting, or performance practice, I love to implement activities, games, and improvisation stories in order to keep the learning environment fun yet efficient. Top it off with some patience and encouragement and you’re set :)

I love being a mentor and allowing students to feel comfortable to be themselves and express their interests and dreams.

I also love witnessing students’ improvements, growth, and overall love of the subject they are learning to master. Watching students light up when they’ve overcome an obstacle they were facing or found a piece of music they were inspired by is such a wonderful feeling.

My first experience as a teacher was in Trang, Thailand, as a Kindergarten and Primary school teacher at a private school. I then branched out to private and one-on-one lessons, both in Thailand and back at home in The States.

I have a minor in music performance (emphasis on voice) from Minnesota State University. I took private piano and voice lessons from a professionals for three years at university, and have over 7 years of experience in audtitioned university and state chamber choirs. I have also performed as a lead in an opera and sang with an orchestra in the beautiful Overature Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisconsin.

I have been teaching one-on-one lessons for students for three years (primarily English lessons, and as of last year piano and voice as well).

About the lesson

I first like to get to know the student by asking him or her what they love about music. We also play a few ice breakers or share interests or passions. I also like to assess the current knowledge the student has of their subject through playing or singing a song, or showing me anything that they can do. We also discuss their goals and intentions or, if it’s something they haven’t yet thought about, set some goals and intentions (I like to use James Clear’s method of “identity: processes: outcomes” that I will dive into and explain in our lessons). That being said, I also like to play or sing something for the student as well!

I have mostly worked with students ages 4-12, with an occassional adult.

I have two pieces of advice to give to students looking to hire a teacher depending on how you interpret this question:

First, explore different interests or specialties related to the subject and figure out which ones make you feel the most alive and pursue those. Sometimes this can be a long process, and that’s okay.

Secondly, like in any practice, there are times where your interest in your subject will ebb and flow; establishing perservance through the more difficult times is more than worth it in the long run.

I've been practicing how to produce and process my own music for the last year, and as of November I've fully composed and produced my own original songs in Ableton Live.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students could think about how much time they would like to spending practicing and learning their subject, and what kind of learner they may potentially be (visual, auditory, or kinesthetic; this is something I assess as a teacher as well).
