About Victoria

Welcome to Victoria Joy Voice & Music Lessons! Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile! I hold a Bachelor’s of Music Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Kansas. During college, I took a course in vocal pedagogy with vocal anatomy/physiology as part of my training. I am a classically trained soprano who sings opera and art songs, but I also love to write and perform my own original music (Tori Joy on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube). I've been teaching online voice lessons for two years and my students have gained a true passion for music while reaching their goals such as getting cast in musicals, earning solos in choir, and even writing their own music (plus so much more!). You will learn about vocal health, how the voice works, expanding your range in a healthy way, and finding your voice that is true to you! To help you get to where you wish to be in your singing ability, I will work toward your specific personal goals by teaching individualized techniques and repertoire that will be beneficial and suitable to your unique voice. Virtual voice lessons may not be quite the same as in person lessons, but I have the skills and resources to give you an immensely valuable learning experience within the comfort of your own home. I specialize in a wide variety of musical genres, from opera and classical voice to pop and soul music. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels! I am excited to assist you in your vocal journey and growth!

In June of 2020, I worked as a vocal instructor for a rock camp for the youth of Lawrence, KS called Amplify Lawrence. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp had to be online. Even though online lessons are not quite the same as in person lessons, I quickly found ways to make online teaching equally as helpful and enjoyable as in person teaching. I absolutely loved teaching online for Amplify Lawrence, so I decided to start up my own private voice studio in August of 2020. Since then, I have learned even more about how to make online teaching more effective and I am confident in my ability to give my students the best online learning experience as possible.

I completed my Bachelor’s of Music in Voice Performance at the University of Kansas in the summer of 2020. There, I took voice lessons with Dr. Crystal Buck for one year and Dr. Genaro Méndez for three years. Along with voice lessons, I also studied separately with Martin Katz, Joyce Castle, Craig Rutenberg, Julio Muñoz, and David Small. I also took two years of voice lessons prior to college with Kenzie Phillips. I completed my certification for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) on November 28th, 2020.

About the lesson

The first voice lesson typically consists of a series of questions that I will ask you to help me understand where you currently stand regarding your vocal/musical abilities. I will ask about your experience, personal goals, and vocal health. I will also tell you a little bit more about me. Then, I will conduct a series of exercises to assess different parts of your voice, such as range, tessitura, breath, onset, support, resonance, and diction. Together, we will then come up with a list of goals to work toward as well as repertoire to learn.

Currently, my students range from ages 5-57. I have worked with students with all different levels of musical and vocal ability.

Go for an instructor who adapts their teaching to each student rather than using a one-size-fits-all style of teaching. In all music lessons, but especially voice because no instrument is like your own unique voice, flexibility is key. It is important that the teacher meets each student where they are and helps them build up from there. Make sure that whoever you work with is willing to lift you up, not hover over you. Also, try to make sure that the instructor is diverse in their repertoire as well as teaching material, or at least make sure they are well versed in the type(s) of repertoire you are interested in.

My senior recital on March 29th, 2020. It was supposed to be at the Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall at the University of Kansas. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had suddenly cancelled all of my upcoming performances, including the one I had looked forward to since my freshman year of college. My senior recital wasn’t at the recital hall. I did it online, through Facebook live, in the living room of my apartment. I wore my yellow gown that I had bought for the recital (but decided to leave out the super high sparkly heels and go for socks instead) and sang through my one hour long recital with my roommate and our two cats in the audience. It was not nearly like I had imagined it would be, but there were over 100 people watching online and it was so wonderful! In the midst of a pandemic, even though everything was cancelled, I kept going and I sang my full recital. I had prepared for that day for four years, and I didn’t let anything stop me!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of repertoire have they worked with? How well are they trained in vocal health/physiology? Do they use the same vocal exercises for all of their students, or do they personalize them to fit each student’s range/ability? Do they specialize in or have experience with the type(s) of music you are interested in? Are they accessible and responsive?

Lesson time options are 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or one hour. You can pay for multiple lessons in advance, or pay for each lesson individually. I accept Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or Apple Pay. I am currently offering a NEW STUDENT DISCOUNT where you can purchase your first four lessons in advance and save some money! Contact me for more details! *Payments are due by the start of each lesson. *Lesson prices are subject to a small annual increase. Returning students will receive advance notice (6 weeks minimum) of any rate increases. *There will be a 30% fee for short notice bookings (24 hours or less). *If you do not show up to a lesson without at least 1 hour notice, you will still be charged the full amount.
