About Janay’

Music has the ability to change lives, even save them. Singing is the first known introduction to sound that humans have then translated into instrumental mimicking and it has evolved from there. My studio motto, "Music is where the Soul lives", is true to how I integrate yourself into the sounds you make. Every student's process is different because no one person is the same. I customize my lessons to cater to my students' interests over time. The beauty lies within the journey your discovery takes you. I have 3 degrees in music education: an associates, and two Bachelor's degrees. I have won, 2nd place in NATS competitions on the east coast twice, and my first year competing, I won an honorary award. I never took lessons until I'd reached college level, and was able to compete with the best of us. For my senior Recital in undergraduate studies, I completed a Masters level contemporary performance piece with minimal mistakes and great expression, Titled, "Try Me Good King", by Libby Larson. I may not have a masters degree, but I know the voice and how to communicate complex advanced vocal techniques to students. I have been teaching private lessons for 7 years. No two students are the same. My extensive education in music studies have given me the ability to also assist with composition studies as well. Some of my closest friends were composition students, and we would share study experiences with one another extensively on a daily basis. It is important for compositors to understand how instruments work to write for them, including the voice. I teach on the go as well! For those who do not have access to quality and affordable educators, this is a wonderful resource to use! I am in a position to negotiate prices for those with financial difficulties. I started by instructing my best friend for free through my own college education. I've always been a teachers assistant throughout my primary studies, helping the teacher access the students that would get lost in the folds. I have a passion for teaching. And unlike our failed education program, I truly believe that no child should be left behind.

I have been extensively trained as an educator. I understand all of the different types of learning styles and what is needed to reach each student's learning style for the most effective approach. This benefits me on the privatized scale because my attention is not split amongst several different learning styles. You'd have me all to yourself. I was trained as a classical vocalist, and am have spent most of my undergraduate years taking extensive music history courses where we analyzed composition styles and the evolution of music theory over time. Essentially understanding how the human war evolved to accept new sounds over time. That is an essential lesson to understanding your craft.

About the lesson

The first lesson is a complimentary Intake lesson. I have a preassessment designed to identify your level of education to create a baseline from which we will work. It is a complimentary lesson because it is primarily a pre-test with some instruction based on the pretext results. It's an opportunity for you to test me out as an educator. You have to see for yourself if we make a good fit before you make your decision. Not every teacher works for every student, and no offense will be taken if it is determined to be the case. The preassessment is designed from extensive teacher education training.

I have worked privately with a wide variety of students, including special needs who have a passion for music. My past students include ages from 8-75. The voice changes depending on your stage of development and that includes the aging voice! I worked with an aging community group and brought a vitality to their sound.

Advice for auditioning a private instructor in music. I would suggest, to ask questions that are specific to how YOU learn. Nobody knows how you learn better than you. See how the educator responds. If they are not responsive or effective in their response, they may not be for you. That is typically an indicator that the instructor is unwilling to match their students needs. be wary of someone who decides to charge you for an intake lesson.

Recently I had the pleasure of presenting a public reading of a unique play in my community as an actress. We held two rehearsals before the show, and it was a pleasure to use everything I had learned in the acting field (including opera studies) in the performance of such a piece. The audience had a blast and the actors were all very skilled and a pleasure to work with.

How do you cater to someone who is very visual, verbal, movement oriented, etc.(be specific to your needs as a student)?

Identify your goals and ask the teacher if they are willing to help you reach those specific goals. Keep these potentials in mind: Personal growth (no performance needed), performance oriented instruction, writing music for submission or for personal reasons, self marketing desires, genre of desires focus.

Answer the questions, what do YOU want from your instruction? And can your educator provide you with access to these Goals effectively?

My standard Prices are $30 for a half hour, $60 for a full hour. I do negotiate prices according to financial difficulties if they exist. I understand these are difficult times and a stubbornness to maintain these standards can hinder helping a potential musical genius to discover themselves. Fiscal capabilities should NOT be a hindrance to the creative process.
