About Albert

Music coaching has been a huge part of my 30+ years of professional music-directing. My approach is exacting—but also patient and caring. And with an undercurrent of fun. Who needs music to be a drag?

I've taught countless performers their music for over 3 decades in my work as MD and arranger on hundreds of shows, all the way from the first writing stages, through developmental readings, to full productions [impressive credentials below] :)

I’ve been on either side of the audition table more times than I can count, both as MD and as an accompanist, so I have a good idea what the "creative staff" might be looking & listening for, what might pique their interest, and what might not. 'Might', being the key word...

But take heart—together we'll pinpoint your particular strengths and parlay them into convincing performances characterized by consistent self-assurance. ________________________________________________

Selected Experience:

Musical Director, Arranger, Orchestrator (2008 - 2009) 'The Christmas Sweater': Nationwide Tour • Wrote music based on traditional themes, and led an onstage orchestra, backing a not-yet-infamous CNN personality in a staging of his semi-autobiographical NY Times Bestseller

Arranger, Orchestrator (2006-2007) REEL NY: 'The Healing Gardens of New York'—Channel Thirteen/WNET

Musical Director, Conductor, Arranger, Orchestrator (1995 - 2007) Multiple Industrial Shows • Co-created shows with Jack Morton, Caribiner, Sandra Arnold; for Dean Witter, Johnson & Johnson, Siemens; at the Metropolitan Club (NYC), Plaza Hotel (NYC), Charles Hotel (Boston), Ritz-Carlton (Montreal), Century Hotel (LA), and other venues just as schnazzy

Arranger, Orchestrator (1994 - 1995) 'Martha Stewart: Living' Television Series—CBS

Musical Director, Arranger, Cast Member (1992 - 2000) 'The Big Bang': A New Musical—Douglas Fairbanks Theatre, NY, NY • Since I was involved in the creation of this hilarious 3-man musical, the role of "Albert" the pianist was named for me!

Musical Director, Arranger (1991 - 1992) 'Eating Raoul': A New Musical—Union Square Theatre, NY, NY • With its $1,000,000+ budget, this wonderfully irreverent musical comedy was, at the time The Most Expensive Flop in Off-Bway History. In its afterlife, the show is a hit worldwide.

_______________________________________________ Publications: Over 200 arrangements, for theatre, band, orchestra, piano, organ • Hal Leonard, Warner, United Artists, Chappell, Samuel French, Dramatic Publishing, Theodore Presser

• The most notorious is "Let's Go Blue!" This musical cheer, written for the University of Michigan, has appeared in 12 major motion pictures (and counting), among them 'The Big Chill' and 'Remember the Titans', as well as on the TV series 'The Simpsons', 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Ed', and can be heard—incessantly—in stadiums and arenas worldwide. _______________________________________________ Education: Master of Music in Music Education University of Michigan School of Music, 1977 Bachelor of Music in Music Education University of Michigan School of Music, 1975

I was mainly a trombonist as a kid, but my high school friends started asking me to accompany them on the piano at solo & ensemble festivals, and I couldn't making helpful suggestions. They responded well, and here I am! Natural coaching instinct.

I received both my Bachelor and Master of Music (Music Education) from the University of Michigan School of Music (now "School of Music, Theatre & Dance").

Other than arranging, and playing trombone & piano, for three years I was the drum major of the Michigan Marching Band—planning rehearsals; teaching, rehearsing and perfecting movement and choreography; and learning to lead, motivate and wrangle 250 students—pretty useful skills for coaching, let me tell you!

As Graduate Assistant I was the Michigan Marching Band's principal music arranger in the mid 70s. One of my arrangements was a musical cheer we called 'Let's Go Blue!'—which has since appeared in twelve major motion pictures (among them 'The Big Chill' and 'Remember the Titans') as well as on 'The Simpsons', 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Ed', and can still be heard every week in stadiums and arenas worldwide.

About the lesson

From junior high kids to Broadway stars. In 2013 I coached one of the three winners of the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art concerto competition and am proud of whatever contribution I made to his success.

I recently returned to NYC from the O'Neill Theatre Center, where I was the musical director, arranger, pianist for a series of well-received staged readings of the new musical of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-5.
