About Samantha

I went to Needlecraft Sewing School at a young age to learn how to sew in honor of my grandmother. I took so well to the craft I started teaching at the sewing school at just 13 as my first job! I made a lot of my clothing throughout high school and in college I got involved in Comic Con and started making costumes for fans on Etsy. Since moving to LA, I have worked as a nanny and started teaching sewing lessons again. My teaching style has students learning by doing. I explain, observe, and encourage; but I really try to enable students to go through each step and sew themselves. A special skill I learned from my days as an instructor at Needlecraft is I teach pattern making, as well as how to follow a store bought pattern. The most rewarding thing for me about teaching young people to sew is the pride they have in their projects and how their confidence grows for such a sense of accomplishment.

I started teaching because I was doing so well in my sewing classes and my instructer wanted to bring me onto their team. I started sewing because I was really close with my grandmother as a child and she was a self-taught expert seamstress. She would make the whole family replica costumes for halloween, prom dress, even wedding dress, etc. I wanted to learn in honor of her when she passed away.

I learned to sew and worked at Needlecraft sewing school for 3 years. Since then I practice my craft and am constantly pushing to learn new skills by making my own clothes and making custom costumes for comic con fans via Etsy.

About the lesson

I start by assessing their level of skill, as I teach all levels. Then I tailor 5 lesson plans to start of what they aspire to learn within their current skill set. I also like to keep in mind what their goals and reason for learning the skill of sewing is to help better customize my lessons to each individual student.

I've worked with students of all ages, starting as young as 3 years old.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what their goal is for learning to sew. Do they just want the skillset? Are they looking to make something in particular? Want the skill to prep for fashion school? Be a designer? etc.

Details

My pricing system is custom to the student based on hours per week they want lessons, number of projects they wish to complete within a month, and cost of supplies for the pieces. Generally for a single student who wants to get their own supplies for their projects I charge $40 an hour.
