About Laura

I'm always encouraging and like to keep things fun. Creativity should be fun!

I like to get to know my students and their interests, so I can help build their creative confidence in addition to their skills.

Those moments when a student gets excited about an accomplisment. Doesn't matter what it is! Seeing that passion is one of the greatest rewards!

Sort of fell into it really! I love to share what I've made and had people asking - how did you do that?! So I taught them! Teaching others what you love to do and seeing their own excitement and love grow is a great feeling.

I am a lifelong crafter. I love creating and I love sharing. To me, teaching is sharing!

I have taken quite a few workshops and lessons so I know what makes a good class. Most of my education/training has been experimenting and getting my hands dirty!

I am also the president of the Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guild. We love welcoming all types of quilters/sewers of all experience levels and sharing our knowledge with each other.

About the lesson

First, I'm encouraging the whole time. There is no real "wrong" way to do something. There are no "stupid" questions. Some of my best creations were when I did something "wrong". Never feel like you can't do something. You totally can! Just find your groove and I'm here to help with that.

Second, I like to get a base line of what my student knows and what they WANT to learn - then go from there. I don't want to focus on sewing things that my student doesn't care about. Working with zippers, buttons and other hardware may be a "basic" sewing technique, but if my students wants to learn quilting, we aren't going to waste our time!

Third, we have fun and learn together! This won't be a typical classroom setting or instruction. We are going to learn with our hands, get creative and have a great time.

Mostly beginners. I have also worked with intermediate sewers on special projects or techniques that they needed one on one instruction with.

The beauty of sewing or crafting or quilting is that there are so many techniques to learn! You may sew, but quilting confounds you! Some quilters spend their whole life piecing, and then try applique and need help!

Find someone that you click with. Someone that doesn't turn learning into a chore. Someone that makes you excited to learn from and encourages you. Someone that makes things fun and creative. You can learn techniques from a teacher, but you get creative and learn more from a friend.

I had met a fellow quilter and it turns out that she had also attended the North Texas Quilt Festival. We talked about the shopping, the classes, and then the quilts in the show. She described several quilts that were her favorites and inspired her. Two of those quilts were mine! I didn't win a ribbon, but that feeling of a perfect stranger admiring your work is probably better!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are you interested in? What do you like? What styles? What do you gravitate towards? What do you want to make?

There are so many things to learn that it helps to narrow down what draws you in about creative arts and crafting. If you only want to learn to sew a few pillows for the house, start there. If you like traditional quilts and want to learn how to piece them, then make sure your teacher knows that instead of starting with Art Quilting.
