About DENISE

I've been sewing for over 40 years and love the creativity of it. I sew at least a little bit almost every day and some days non-stop. Over the years I've made clothes and things both for myself and others from patterns or just my imagination. I love taking existing garments and altering them to better suit my tastes, needs & shape while working little bits of my personality in. One time I made a dress for a Star Trek webasode. I never met the girl who wore it. I worked off her measurements and it fit her like a glove. I was also hired by in internet company that offered alterations and repairs. (The business didn't last, unfortunately.)

One-on-one instruction is the best way to learn and the learning will progress at your pace until you're ready to move forward.

I love teaching and sharing knowledge; helping someone grow. It makes me happy to see someone else get happy after I've taught them something they wanted to learn. It's also very gratifying to do your own repairs and alterations. It's also nice to know you can sew a gift - everyone knows homemade gifts mean more than store bought. I feel sewing is a dying art so to pass it on helps keep it alive.

The training I have that enables me to be able to teach is a lifetime of experience. My mom started teaching me to sew when I was just 11. I am now 56. I can do alterations, mending, make a garment for someone from just their measurements, never meeting the person. I can take existing clothes and alter various parts for a more flattering look and a better fit, even creating a whole new garment. I have learned a lot the hard way and I'd like to be able to let someone else learn the shortcuts easier than I did.

About the lesson

Start getting to know each other with a conversation. Who is this person? How do they precieve me & themselves Where they are in life? How much time & effort can be put into the learning? I would like to find out how much they already know about sewing & what they hope to learn. We would then start learning about the machine and tools. Then we'd do some practice stitching to get comfortable. After that a first project would be picked and discussed. Then---lets do it! Let's begin to sew and get something made!

Perfect! Denise is patient, explains sewing in a way that I can understand and if I don't, she changes tactics. She is very good at teaching! She is flexible with time and hours. I have really enjoyed working with her, and will continue to do so!

Perfect! Denise is a wonderful teacher full of knowledge and helpful advice!
I had no clue how to even read a sewing pattern and she was able to teach me and she gave me some very helpful advice on how to maintain my sewing machine. She knew why the thread would get caught up and knew exactly how to fix it. My confidence with sewing has grown so much since having her as a teacher. Her prices are very reasonable and we never have had any schedule conflicts which is wonderful.

I do not as of yet have a standard pricing system in place for my lessons. I'd like to charge based on individual conditions. It can be as easy as pay-by the lesson, or pay by the lesson with a discount given for planning a block of time/number of lessons. I am a pretty flexible person and I'd hate for someone to give up because they thought they couldn't afford it.
