About Wendy

My name is Wendy Leonard, and I am a Trained Sewing Instructor ((concealed information)

My students comment that I am very patient when they feel they're not catching on quickly. I'm not trying to rush you out the door; I'm trying to teach you my passion for sewing.

Lessons

Each lesson is two hours long, which is enough time to complete a project. Students leave with a feeling of accomplishment and knowing they can learn to sew. We start with a couch pillow on week one, and a pair of pajama pants or pull-on women's pants on week two, and we move on from there.

We begin with three or four lessons I choose because they teach all of the things you need to know. After that, we design the lessons around what you would like to learn.

Family Group Lessons

I am happy to teach sisters or mom and daughter(s); however, how many at one time would depend on ages.

I have been sewing since I was 8 years old, and I have found it to be a great creative release. I especially love sewing for kids and making costumes.

I also love sharing my passion with others, so teaching sewing was a natural combination for me.

I enjoyed sewing from the age of 8. After homeschooling my children, I found I loved teaching as well. It seemed natural to combine the two loves into one. I don't make any money teaching sewing, but I share a skill that people won't otherwise learn.

Trainedsewinginstructor.org offers training in teaching sewing. I completed that program in 2010. I have taught lessons privately from my home and through Joann.

About the lesson

We will discuss your sewing interests on the phone and schedule a day and time for your lessons. I have a list of the beginner lessons that includes pattern numbers and supplies you will need to bring to each lesson. These items must be purchased before your lesson date because you need them to make your project.

I'm very transparent. If you have a question, call me. I just ask that you be respectful and call to cancel if you can't make it.

Girls from age 8 through senior citizens.

What are your interests? Do you want to quilt? Sew clothing? Create home decor and crafty items? Make dog clothing or doll clothes? Some teachers may specialize in one area.

If you are going to buy a sewing machine, you might wait for advice from the instructor. There are many very good machines out there, and there are many not-so-good machines.

I like to meet a new student at the local fabric store for lesson 1. We talk about types of fabric, look at the pattern books and accessories and tools you may want to have on hand. It helps when I give you the supply list for your next project because you will have been introduced to the tools you need. It also allows you time to purchase a machine after we have talked about machines.

Can you be consistent? Sewing is a combination of a lot of different skills. It can't be learned in one lesson.

I charge $20 for each 2-hour lesson.

Lessons are two hours to allow time to complete a project by the end of the lesson.

The reason I charge so little for your lesson is that some weeks you will have additional expenses for a pattern and materials.

Level 1, Lesson 1: Pajama pants (or women's pull-on pants) (sewing curves and straight seams, installing elastic, hemming)

Level 1, Lesson 2: Basic pillow cover (couch or bed decorative pillow) (Introduction to home decor)

Level 1, Lesson 3: Basic T-Shirt (working with stretch fabric, installing a ribbed neckband)

Level 1, Lesson 4: Designer Pillow (Adding trims and design elements to the basic pillow cover)

Level 2, Lesson 2: Zip it up! (installing zippers)

Level 2, Lesson 3: Blouse basics (collars, sleeves, buttons, button holes)
