About Cammy

I believe that reading is one of the most important skills a child should possess. Children cannot understand how the world works without being able to read.

My passion for helping students to strengthen their reading skills developed over a year ago while I was a substitute teacher. I was assigned to a first grade girls classroom for the last month of school. During reading time, I noticed that some of my first grade students were not able to read very well. I thought that simply reading through one book a week would help students with fluency. Little did I know that there was much more work to do to help these students to improve in their reading. From August 2019 to June 2020, I volunteered as a reading interventionist at a school in Wilmington Delaware. I met and worked with students between the ages of six and nine. I created individualized lessons for each students based on the reading skills that needed to be sharpened. I used the Reading Assist Institute (IMSLEC accredited) curriculum write my lesson plans for my students. In April of 2020 I received certification at the teaching level through this IMSLEC accredited reading intervention program. Reading Assist Institute helped to prepare me to work with students on different reading levels, as well as students who are dyslexic.

In addition to being certified in reading intervention, I am also. 5th grade teacher in New Orleans. I teach all subjects, and would be willing to tutor students in math as well.

I enjoy the fact that I am making life better for a child. I am changing (what could be) a not so bright future for my students. I am assisting my students in being able to catch up with their classmates and excel for the rest of their school career. I am setting my stduents up for success in reading and beyond.

I volunteered as a reading intervention through Americorps and Rasing Assist Institute. During the 2019-2020 school year, I simultaneously worked towards being certified to tutor students in reading. As of April 2020, that certification has been obtained.

I currently teach fifth grade in New Orleans, Louisiana.

About the lesson

I usually speak to the parent to see what specific issues (phonological/phonemic, etc) students usually have. Once I speak with the parent, I move on to assessing the students. I use the information from the assessment to make a decision about what level the student will begin from within the reading intervention curriculum. After that, I speak to the parents to let them know what level the student will begin on, and how the student will benefit from beginning on this level in the curriculum. Students improve the most when they have reading intervention time three or more days out of the week, but it is perfectly understandable if that is not possible. Every session (post assessment) is 45 minutes.

Details

I charge $50 per single lesson, or $100 if a parent signs up his/her student up for weekly lessons (one lesson per day each week, 45 minutes.)
