About Jhay-lah

I was trained to tutor students K-5 in reading through a Targeted Literacy Program. I am currently a junior in college persuing a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I will continue to earn a Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology. I am passionate about working with children espeically regarding reading and phonics!

Targeted Literacy Project

Undergrad courses in Phonetics, Speech Science, and other communication sciences and disorders courses. As well as coureses in child psychology through earning a minor in pscyhology.

About the lesson

I have access to an online book account in order to best tutor children in reading.

First, we play an ice breaker game.

Then, we get our brains on with some word work.

Next, the child will choose a book.

Then, we practice the vocab for that book (decoding/spelling)

We read the book once we are comortable with the vocab and the word work associated with that book.

We read and discuss comprehension questions throughout the book and after we read.

Children in grades K-5. I have some experience working with children on the autism spectrum.

Look for someone who is passionate and will not get burned out! You want to have fun when learning so look for someone who will make it fun.

I had been working with a child on fluency while reading and for the longest time he was unconfident and nervous to read. After 4 sessions with him (2 weeks) he showed excitement to read a book. This was a huge win! He was talkative, engaged, and confident. He made some mistakes but did not get discouraged. Later, his mom contacted me saying she also noticed a confidence shift and that she was thankful for my patience and encouragment with him.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How many times do you want to meet per week and for how long of sessions? What are the specific areas in which you are struggling? How can the teacher support you the best? How do you learn best?

Details

I charge $20 an hour for tutoring. I do a lot of preparating and planning for each student to ensure they get the most out of each session! I typically do 2, 30 minute sessions per week with a child for $20.
