About Ruth
I excel at uncovering patterns and habits that might make a subject feel frustrating or unapproachable. I work with students to identify those patterns then co-create workable, sustainable habits that support success. I won't impose a system on students and find the most success happens when they are actively involved in finding solutions. If one method isn't working, I'll keep working with the student to tweak and alter things until we find something that does.
This is informed by my time being trained in emotional intelligence at a Chicago-area non-profit for 3 years. I looked deeply at some of my own patterns, like procrastination, and started to understand that there was a whole system of thoughts, beliefs, and feelings underneath my resistance to getting started. As an employee, I supported volunteers to identify their goals, discover and anticipate barriers, and create strategies around them.
I love getting to know students and understanding what they need to succeed. When I worked with a young boy on his reading, I noticed that he gave up quickly when he hit an unfamiliar word. I wanted to work on his ability to handle his frustration. We came up with a system together where he gave new words three honest and sincere tries before I helped him pronounce the word. I watched him become a more confident reader, even ready to tackle the made-up words he found in Dr. Suess books.
My first formal tutoring job occurred post-college when I worked as the afterschool care specialist for a developmentally delayed middle schooler. Together, we tackled his reading, math, and choir homework, along with other skills for his IEP. I also served as a camp counselor for 5 years for first and second graders.
My foremost teaching experience is in the field of leadership development. I began training others in leadership skills as early as high school and have taken on training roles in several jobs and volunteer positions since then. I've co-created 4 pieces of curricula and received 3 years of training in leadership development and project management at one of my jobs.

My first objective is to get to know the student, establish rapport, and see if there are any patterns of thought or behavior that are making it difficult for them to study the material. From my own experience, I know that we sometimes have emotional relationships with studying that need to be addressed before we can succeed.
Most of my teaching and tutoring experience is with middle schoolers, high schoolers, young adults, and older adults.
If you don't have great study habits or sometimes have a tough relationship with your homework, look for instructors who can help you break down barriers to learning and create systems for success. Beyond that, look for someone who can relate to your frustration. People who had to work on those habits can be the best, and most relatable, resources.
I'm proud of the way I have supported a friend with their executive function recently. I've worked with them weekly to create systems that reduce barriers and set them up for success in the areas that are most difficult for them.
