About Christine

I started tutoring because I believe every child can succeed in education. I especially love to work with struggling readers and reluctant math students. The parents of my current students say that their child has gained confidence reading and are more excited to read a book on their own. I focus primarily on phonics and reading comprehension. We play games, read text, and so forth. For math, I share strategies, develop greater understanding of the math principles and strongly believe any child can be good at math. Hands on learning is the best approach.

My background is in neuroscience. I spent over 15 years working in policy and academic settings. A few years ago, I stepped away from this work and started to substitute teach in the local elementary school. While I enjoy being in a classroom, I prefer to work one-on-one with students.

My greatest joy is seeing kids excited about learning. I love being in the school and having the kids excited that I am the teacher for the day. In one class, where I was a long-term substitute, students who wanted/needed extra support always sat at the teacher table so I could work with them while other students worked independently. I always had more students than seats at my table. These kids wanted to achieve more and I wanted to help them.

With my current tutoring students, I feel joy to hear from parents that their child will actively choose a book to read or learn how to decode words.

About the lesson

I first like to have an in depth conversation with the parents to understand what problems they are seeing and what they have tried in the past. I also want to know about the student (motivation, frustrations, and so forth). The first session, we will focus on pinpointing areas that support can help them achieve confidence and results.
