About Shealyn
No two students learn the same way. I know how incredibly frustrating and discouraging it is to not understand the information presented by your teacher when all of your classmates seem to. I've been there and I've learned that it's not your fault. All students learn and study differently, and I'm here to help.
I tutored a young boy for two summers when he was entering kindergarten and then first grade, so I understand the importance of personalized teaching. He wasn't motivated to sit down and do summer work when all he wanted to do was go outside and play. So, I created spelling games out of basketball and jumping on the trampoline to help him learn effectively. It was so rewarding to see his progress and confidence when he was engaged and motivated to learn.
I recently graduated from the Taft School and I'm now finishing up my freshman year at Lehigh University (or rather in my bedroom because of distance learning). I've learned how to study and I'm confident that I can help others learn what works best for them. I'm planning on majoring in Psychology and maybe Marketing. I took AP Psych last year and it was my favorite class. I got a 5 on the AP, so I'm confident that I can help others understand the information as well. I'm also comfortable with other subjects, including English and basic math.
This is a bizarre time in our lives and I'm currently dealing with the struggles that come with remote learning. It's challenging to suddenly not have face-to-face conversations and lessons with your teachers, and I hope that I can help people who are having a tough time with this adjustment.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a concept finally click for someone. No matter how small or unimportant the information may seem, it is such a relief as a student to finally understand something that seemed unreachable.
A parent that I knew came to me to ask if I could help teach her 5 year old son how to read and write in English because it is her second language. I spent two summers with him and it was a challenging, yet rewarding experience.

I think it's important to have the student self-reflect. They may be lost when the teacher is talking and get discouraged, but it's essential to identify why they are lost and what doesn't work. Once you can identify what teaching style isn't working, then you can start discovering what will work!
Whether you pick me or not as a tutor, make sure that you are being understood as an individual student. You learn differently than your classmates and friends, and your strong suits should be recognized and emphasized. I hope that you find someone that is a good match for you and that helps you become more confident in not only the subject you're learning, but also as a student in general.
Little accomplishments are the most rewarding in my opinion. Although this may sound random, I remember the day that the young boy that I tutored finally understood how the silent E at the end of a word changes how the preceding vowel is pronounced. Although it may sound silly, it was a great day to see that our hard work was paying off. To see the concept click in his head and the joy he felt when he finally grasped the concept was a really great moment.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What teaching methods have worked best for me in the past? Which have not? Which classes do I do well in and why? How can I apply the skills learned in other classes to better understand this material? Do I absorb information when watching a video? Listening to a lecture? Seeing the words written on a whiteboard?
